There is a masde culture note sticky on this site, but off the top of my head... low light (like for Phals),cool temps (mountain growers),good air circulation, keep moist but not wet.

The species that makes Maui Jewel fragrant is Masd glandulosa. It's also a cute small species with purple warty bumps inside the flower. Neat little species.

Masdevallias are to me the most amazing genus. I really love them, just a shame it gets so hot here in summer. I have to move them around in the heat so they don't get too warm (like today).

Some of the flowers in this thread are truly stunning.

Oh, I had one of those that I bought at a home and garden show years ago. The I put it in the bathroom and it grew and grew. I think it was in a 6"or 8" pot. Then I decided to put it outside in the sun cause it wasn't blooming. Sure enough, it died. Then I bought several small different colored ones and put them in a single pot. Boy was it pretty. Yet again they rotted and died. Too much water maybe.

My question is are Masdevallias easy to grow and will it survive in a GH. I read or heard somewhere they come in cool or warm growers. Is this true? Would like to try them again in the GH. All the ones on this thread are pretty. Love to try to get a rainbow of colors in a single pot again. plus I didn't know there were fragrant ones.
See I learn something everyday here. Thanks.

The culture notes seem to be more for the cool growing types. What about the warm growing types?

Masdevallia

I've got one too. It's name is Angel Tears. And there is a new growth on it and it's quite plump. Could it be a spike? Will I see it flowering soon? I've had it for four months and this would be the first flower for me. Here are some pics of the new growth.

Jenny, sorry not to answer sooner, but I'm working heavy hours lately. I only have time to check in once a day late at night (when I should be in bed). My Massie is still in the same pot it was in when I bought it. Although no longer in flower, it is still doing well with new growth, so I havent re-potted yet. It is currently potted in sphag, and I guess that's the medium it likes, so when I re-pot that's what I'll use. It likes the wetness, but not soggy. Low light with good air circulation.

I got this plant on Wed. 4/30/2008 and it looks great! The only thing I have a question about is the black on the base of the plant. Is that normal pigmentation? I don't know, being a newbie Masdie owner and all. I checked the roots cause we had a freeze advisory over the couple of days that this would have been in transit. Roots look fantastic and have new growths. Hopefully it stays alive for me and blooms. (I REALLY wanted this plant !!!) I can scratch one more off of the wish list !!!

The black on the base of the leaves is normal the black pices in the moss is fern. I check every plant before shipping so i know yours is ok. Keep it moist (I water about every other day) and med light and you should be fine

I got mine on 5-1 which was perfect timing because I had an absolutely nightmarish day at work! Like Jenny, another plant is crossed off the wish list, but the only problem with that is that when one disappears, at least another two take its place There are just too many orchids out there I haven't grown yet...I know you all understand

Gotcha Joe, thanks ! So far it's doing really well and I've been watering every other day. I have it with my Phals and the fan is a blowing away. The leave have relaxed and it looks really good.

Patlee~ I know exactly what you're talking about. My list never dwindles.
