flower spike is brown

bought a couple of dendrobiums with what appeared to be flower spikes but with a dry brown color. i was told that the flowers were soon to come, and that the brown layer would slough off, is this true? its been two weeks now and i'm thinking its the shock of moving to a 'new home' or are these spikes dead? how long should i wait? i am such a newbie this might just sound so stupid

If the flower spikes are truly brown I'd say they are dead and can be removed - absolutely for sure if they are dry-like.

New spikes should be rather green. Does it have buds?

A number of my Dendrobium hybrids are just starting to grow spikes. If the first attemp by the plant failed due to an environmental change, may be the plant will try again in a few weeks. Cynthia

there seems to be some buds at the nodal areas which are thickened. but these are brown too, but there are some parts that seem to show green underneath. should i just cut the tip to see if it is indeed dead, what if it is green and fleshy inside

i cut the tip of one flower spike which seemed wilted and felt "empty" (as compared to the others which feel fleshy and firm), but it was green and healthy looking inside, so maybe i should just wait it out...
