Sun Shade Cloth

Hi,

I have the following 3 questions that need your advice:

1. Can Phalaenopsis survive under a full sun afternoon with a 50% sunshade cloth protection?

2. Will a 50% solar heat rejection solar film provides the same protection as a 50 % sunshade cloth?

3. Anyone know where can I buy a black sunshade cloth at a reasonable price in Singapore? I checked with one of the nursery who is selling a 2 m width sunshade cloth at S$ 8 per meter.

Thanks

I can address question # 1. A single layer of typical shade cloth will not protect your phals. I use two layers to protect them during the high part of the day.

Phals grown in pots need about 1500 foot candles and summer sun is about 11,000.

That means about 85% shade cloth either in a single piece or 2 - 65% pieces on top of each other.

S$ 8 per meter at 2 meter width was quoated by WL that I think is expensive. Initially, I want to get from SONG Orchids, but the boss was away to Malaysia that day. His family members were not aware how much it cost.

$8 for 2 meter. Cheap cheap. I would assume you have a car. You can try Sin flora in Jalan Kayu. This Phalaenopsis bloom under 5000fc(personally 3000fc would be better) which is 50% shade cloth.(i like to call them netting)

Actually I just need a few small pieces of netting to block the full afternoon sun shining down through my North-West facing windows. Do you guys think that a 50 % equally spacing non-slip mat as shown below can be used as a substitute as a 50 % sunshade netting?

that will be more than 50%. You can pass me that mat and I do the measurement for you. Do that when you are around my area. No harm on the Phalaenopsis with that for the time being. They need the light badly. My north window get light from 12 to 2pm.
