New member saying Hi!

I just joined and wanted to say hello. My mom bought me my first orchid today, and I have no idea how to take care of it or how to identify it.
I checked out the identification thread in the newbie section, but it was blank. If you click on my signature, you can see a picture of my new orchid. Can anyone please tell me what type of orchid it is? Thanks

You have a Phalaenopsis or "Moth Orchid" It is one of the easiest orchids to grow. The attached link from the American Orchid Society should give you some guidelines for its care:

That is a Phalaenopsis 'Nivacolor' -- the same as our (first and only) orchid... It's supposed to be one of the easiest orchids to care for and grow, but I'm still finding it a challenge! Good luck to you!

these are by far easy to raise. they will give you hints if they are unhappy, specially with light. i have 8 differant ones in various mediums and lumped a bunch together in a strawberry pot with a differant orchid coming out of each hole. i know most dont like this but i wanted something differant. i just dread the day that i have to bust that pot to repot them.
enjoy your new phal, this site will give you lots of help.

Hi, I think it looks more like Phal Matou Freed, esp if it's got Taiwanese origins... the lips of the Nivacolor looks slightly different.

I think it looks like phal (any one of over 1000 candystripe hybrids). sorry to rain on people's parades, but with as many nearly identical looking phal hybrids as there are out there, it's impossible to know from one small picture.

the best way to identify this plant is to contact the grower that sold it to you, as they typically will only have a few hybrids of each type that they sell, or that are blooming at any one time.

but you could also argue that it doesn't really matter what the exact hybrid name is, since the care for just about all of the generic phal hybrids is the same. a mutt is just as loveable as a purebred, after all!
