| Is this an Oncidium?
Hello Everyone, Here are pictures of one of my orchids, it probably did have a tag a few years ago when i purchased it, but I lost it since. ![]() From pictures I've seen here and there, I think it might be an oncidium, do you agree? It is currently in a 6" pot with Orchid bark and needs repotting (it's been 2 years since I last repotted it). I was thinking of dividing it since it has new growth on 2 different areas of the plant. It's been blooming every year, so I guess I'll repot in bark. What do you think?

i am gong to take a wild assed guess here and say it's a brassia of some sort--spider orchid? but yes, generally in the onc family.

It's a Brassia, or Brassilova which is of the Oncidium Alliance.

Yup it's a member of the Oncidium Alliance, more specifically a Brassia or Brassia hybrid of some sort, possibly Brassia Rex given the size of the plant.

I would. I just can't raise a baby without a name. I gotta call it something.

It is probably Brsdm Shooting Star. It was probably the most common one in this area a couple of years ago. Brsdm are Brassia x Oncidium Intergenerics While it is hard for an identification from a photo. Identifying Brassia in person is often possible. The flower sizes fall within a specific range of size for each variety and the pseudobulbs are very distinct on many varieties. I doubt it is Rex as the flowers should be much larger for Rex. It was named Rex (king) for the large 10 inch flowers. The photo looks to be more like 4-5 inch flowers. If you want to bring it to the Pine Island Garden Show on Feb 21st, I will give it a try. By the way Brassavola are in the Cattleya alliance not Oncidium.

| Ok, sometimes I miss the most obvious jokes. This is just a misspelling of Brassavola....right? Which is not an Oncidium.....which makes it a joke....right?

Jerry, Thank you, That would be great, I doubt it would be in bloom then though, so do you think seeing in person just the bulbs and leaves would help? I had purchased the Plant at a home improvement store, so I would guess it might be Brsdm Shooting Star, it can't be a very rare plant. you are correct about the size of the flowers, they are about 4 or 5 inches.
