VANDA plant alright?

Hello orchid growers!!

New to the forum and would like some advice. I have had this Vanda orchid on my lanai for almost 2 years. It decided to bloom and I'm THRILLED to death, but I am wondering if somebody can tell me what that balled cluster of leaves is at the base of the bloom stalk??? (I know there are probably technical terms for everything I have posted - I don't know them but am more than willing to learn!)

Is that ball of leaves and stalk another plant?!?! Please advise as I think I have put more care into this lovely little plant than I did my child!! (Just kidding - she was taken pretty darned good care of!!)

Any input is greatly appreciated!!

We do need a picture, but for now don't do anything different. It is obviously happy.

VANDA picture

OK folks... I finally reached 5 posts! Wahoo!!!!

Here is my VANDA. I know it's not a great picture, but if you can see the ball of leaves in the bottom third of the picture and have any idea what it is, please enlighten me!!! It's so beautiful and I don't want to do anything to aggravate it!!! Thoughts? Suggestions?

Thanks in advance...

Pretty vanda! It looks like your plant has started a keiki from part way up the main stalk. Are there roots growing from that sideways part (the keiki)? If so, you could remove it, pot it up, and get a new plant. Otherwise just leave it alone. The time may come when you have a stalk from each part of the plant; that would be fun!

hello newbie here..i just bought vandas. they all have spikes and they were cut from the mother plant. Some of them have blooms and they have little roots coming out but my worry is their leaves are wrinkled. I water them 5 times a day and I fertilize weekly with a diluted fertilizer. I had them for 3 weeks now. should I be worried about their wrinkled leaves.

I don't have much experience with Vandas, however I did get one to bloom way up here in Michigan. It was beginners luck, cause it was my first ever orchid. Wish I still had it it may have been as tall as your Vanda.

What a beauty, Vandas are for Florida! Not Michigan.
