Please ID this amazing orchid!

I came across this photo of an awesome orchid and I was wondering if anybody knew what it was. The orchid is form the Singapore Botanical Gardens if that is any help.

Ugh, I can't post the URL until I have made 5 posts on the forum - I'll fix that! (see 5 posts below for the URL) :)

Unfortunately it's not possible to reliably ID an orchid from a picture.

Looks like its from the Oncidium group. Cant help you more than that but it sure is a beauty!

I would try sending them an email with the picture and ask them to identify it....

frostychic 03-29-2011 10:19 AM

Treillw... it's beauty-full :dribble:

Edgy has the best idea... hope you find out the name. Please post it here if/when you do :shakehand

As others have said it is often impossible to be certain of an orchid identification from a single photogragh, especially with hybrids, but this is almost certainly a Trichocentrum or Trichocidium. Probably a hybrid but it appears very similar to Trichocentrum (formerly Oncidium) lanceanum, one of the 'mule ear' Oncidiums. The colors seem unusually vivid but I think that is due to bright back-lighting. It would help to see the whole plant, but I'd be surprised if it was anything else.

I would suggest that this is a form of Onc. lanceanum or a hybrid from it. Onc. lanceanm is variable in color of flower & lip. A pic of the plant would help but give what we have I'd suggest, thats what you have taken.

Hi treillw

I would say that it is definitley a Renanthera hybrid. The genus has the most amazingly vibrant colours!

Hope this helps :)

The flowers do have a certain resemblance to Renantanda (Renanthera x Vanda) hybrids, but the lip is too big - and virtually identical to Trichocentrum lanceanum. But that is why I would like to see the whole plant. There would be little chance of mistaking a Trichocentrum plant for anything else.

OOOo aaahhhh! WOW! Sorry...but that is an amazing orchid! Hope it's a true pic.
