Hi!

Buds and flowers falling off can be caused by a few things... Pictures would be helpful, I think Bolero asked you yesterday to post if you can...There is an "add pictures" button below the box where you write your comments. Some forums don't let you post pictures until you made 5 comments, don't ask me why...

If your plant is "too wet" you could carefully check the roots...

Giving any advice without knowing the type of orchid you have and the media it is in is not that easy...

Most flower shops sell mainly Phalaenopsis orchids, thankfully it is changing for the best and it is getting easier to find other types as well.

If you have a Phalaenopsis, it is potted in a seetrough pot, and you can see the root system and the media...Other types usually potted in white or gray pots.

If your orchid is a Phal and it is in bark, the instuction to soak it in water is correct. Soak it with the plastic pot for 10-15 minutes and drain it well. Make sure there is no water trapped between the leaves and if you keep your plant in a decorative pot, the orchid should never stand in water other than the 10-15 minutes of watering...

If your orchid is a Miltonia/Miltoniopsis, check the media.
Many of this plant are potted in fine choir, coconut husk. It is holding a lots of water, so I would not soak the orchid in this case, though this type of orchids like more moisture than Phal's, too much water will kill the roots.

If your orchid is a Dendrobium, they migh planted in coconut or bark...they also like a bit more moisture than Phal's, but most of them need a winter rest...

Flowers falling off can be just part of the orchids normal life cicle, they flower, than put out new growth/leafs, rest a bit and flower again.

Buds falling off is never a good sign...

The best scenario that your orchid is just stressed...it happens to many orchilds...
They were growing in a green house for years, watered, fertilised regularly, kept in ideal conditions (humidity, temperature, light)...than they are stuffed in plastic wrappes, put in a box/on a stand and sent off to a shop, spending sometimes days in transport and travelling trough countries...just to be displayed in a shop, many times close to the entrance, with the door constantly opening/closing and letting too hot/too cold air srtaight to the plants. They spend days or weeks going without water, and if they not sold quick enough they will finish flowering, get a "reduced" sticker...still not sold after a few days they will be thrown away...

My advice is to try and see what's going on with the roots in the pot, see if there are any pests on the plant, if the medium is broken down/too old, if the roots are mushy and rotten from too much water...If the roots are fine and the media okay, check the leaves...There could be mealy bugs hiding somewhere or other pests.

I change the media with every one of my new plants as soon as I can and keep them in a separete room for a while to make sure they don't have any pests. I water them according to their life cicle and to the weather and off course to their genera...

Please post pictures later if you can, I am sure others will give some advice too...

Best of luck!

good luck with your new orchid...I'm new to orchids too; it's so discouraging to watch them struggle. This seems like a great place to learn from others' experience
