Do the phals have roots other than those long ones? Meaning, some shorter ones also? If so, then a root trim will not hurt them.

I have trimmed roots on phals and catts, when I needed to. It might set them back a little bit but it won't kill them. As a matter of fact, I find that the cut roots usually branch and continue to grow. Just be sure not to cut too short...i would never cut off more than half of what is there.
