My Masd herraardurae project plant update thread

the second and third pictures are when I got it. Since I have had for a few weeks now the new growths have shrivelled up

I finished the glass house and bought three more masd to keep it company in the glass house. Hopefully this will help. Unfortunately this picture doesn't show the project masd. it is on the right behind the front one, lol. But this is it's home now

That looks great, Kortney! I would like to try one of those little houses. The Masdies look so happy in there.

Great job!

Let's hope they stay that way too, lol! They are kind of intimidating just because I'm having humidity issues right now even with the big humidifier running it doesn't seem to stay running long enough to get past 40 percent and maintain at least that even with both the humidifier running, lol.

I am sorry to say I am not part of the Masd. herradurae growing project. But I thought I would post a pic of my plant that just started blooming. Hopefully the project growers are able to get a blooming like this. This blooming is showing 2 flowers open and 17 buds right now with more on the way!

Quick question . What is your herradurae growing in? Is it bark? A lot of the members in the grow project have them in all spagh. I have two, one in S/H and the other in a cocohusk blend. Both are doing excellent for me. Just curious and wondering what everyone is using as medium.

Also, another question, how old is your Masdie? It looks great with all the blooms. I have my project one in hydro. So far, it is doing well. Keeping my fingers crossed!

Hi Jenny,

Mine is in a mixture of coconut chunks, fir bark, and charcoal to help keep the mix a bit fresh. I use RO water with added fertilizer on all my masdies weekly. All my plants do great I have almost hmm...around probably 250 to 300 masdies by now. That seems to work best for me.

mine seems happy with new growths and no leaf loss (fingers are crossed.) How much light does that "house" put out. I've been afraid mine is getting too much light. What would the signs of that be?

You will see a bleaching of the leaf color and eventually the dreaded leaf loss.
Actually masd tend to take higher light levels as long as the air movement and humidity are OK.

I don't remeber, lol! This is a full spectrum compact florescent bulb for fish tanks. I know its no more than 15 watts but i think it is way less than that. I'm thinking hopefully it won't be too much based on my Restrepia theory: I have two of these bulbs in the frog tank the Restrepias grow outside of the frog tank but under the light from them, so i think if the light was cut in half granted it is not filtered through the glass though it shouldn't be too much. If it is I may have to adjust the light. I know they make 5 watt full spectrum compact florescent bulbs the twisty ones. I dunno if that is a good comparison or not but I think the culture is similar for both plants. When I bought my restrepias the leaves were dark purpleish red (way too much light) I bought some other masd the other from the same place and the leaves do look a little lighter kinda yellowish so that probably means they had too much then? They were both in the same house at the g/h. So now the restrepias have green leaves. What do you guys think? Do you think that sounds ok? or sounds like too much light still? The others I bought already have new bloom spikes coming up that i didn't notice when I bought them. I don't if that means anything yet though since i just got them , lol

Here they are all together, the top left is the project plant in sphag the other are the new ones the right two are Masd Kismit and the front left is Masd Parakeet #6 (ignea x coloptera).

The second picture is ome funny looking growth on the Masd. Parakeet it looks like a new leaf growth is stuck in there or something. What do you guys think?

what a fantastic job you've done w/ your mini-greenhouse! where did you get it or did you have to assemble it?

i also give you mega-props for your most inventive use of a CPU fan. i would never have thought of doing that.

+5 to OP

i think your Restrep's look fine but then again i don't keep these... other members will have to chime in.

good job, either way!

I got the green house thing along time ago from a freind who gave it to my son's dad. Who let me keep a frog in it for the longest, then he died and it sat in my closet forever. It was caulked up all around the bottom and sides. it actually held water and had a drainage hose in the back corner with a plug. It took me forever to scrap all that caulking off and clean it up and repaint and then put it back together. I didn't re caulk it this time though. I painted it with same paint we used to paint the kitchen and bathroom with a month ago, lol.

Hey Kortney good to see you. Mine is being kept on my desk right now with low light and Phal. temps (yes Phal. temps). I still have it in the sphag it came in, not a ton of air movement, and it's got 7 new leaves in different stages of growth. I am thinking that this one isn't the type that does well hanging with the other Masdies lol. When I kept it cool and ventilated it turned plastic on me. I do generally have humidity above 40% all the time, right now it's 73 F with 58% hum. Herra is currently happy as a clam in mud.

oh wow maybe its not warm enough for it then lol. I don't have any new growths or anything. There was some starting when i got it but they all aborted. It usually hovers around mid 60's to 70'sfor daytime temps right now. My humidity was really low. since al the snow melted and it warmed up a bit and rained today it has gone up to 45 percent instead of 17 lol. I am gonna go get anew fan sometime soo to get back into the glass house the new growths aborted after leaving the glass house We'll see this will be an experiment for sure i might have to get another just incase lol.

Mine has stayed above 65 F for most of the winter. I brought it where it was warmer because it was so plastic looking, and about a month later I started seeing new roots, and then it just started shooting out new leaves like crazy. I adore the little thing, it's been super rewarding so far. I am sure you will figure out the culture for it, it probably aborted the leaves cause of the lower humidity.

Hi, Kortney! Your plants look good! Mine hasn't been above 65F all winter. mostly around 60. It's in my basement under 4ft. T-12's. (near the end) It's got a lot of new growth on it despite the fact that it's almost impossible to keep the humidity up this time of year. I'm glad they're all doing so well!

Kortney~ I've kept my heras at constant low to mid 70s this whole time, nothing below 69. I've got new growths and roots.

Mine is still plugging along. I've got a couple new leaves without any loss. It's at 65-75 degrees during the day dropping to as low as high 50's at night.

Personally, when the moss looks dry I give it another day and then douse it. I try to keep the moss moist but not drenched. Usually I give it water out of my drinking glass instead of following the watering regiment of my non-masdie orchids. I have not fertilized it at all. This applies to all my orchids this winter, I have cut back on the fertilizer and seen no ill effects. I plan on resuming fertilization when spring returns (hopefully soon).

mine's shooting little growths out all over--one of them shrivelled and got all ooky, but i think it was because it was too close to the window for a couple of those nights where it got down to ten degrees. the rest of the growths look happy. i water it once a week; by the time i water it's totally dried throughout, then i drench it. (oh, and i fertilize about 1x/3 weeks in the winter. everybody gets all the same fert, at the same time.)

The only fertilizer I have used on mine is worm poop thrown on top of the sphag. I am not brave enough to try regular fertilizer with mine. I actually have not done any fertilizing this winter on any of the plants, with the exception of throwing the worm poop at them. I really hate mixing it up lol.

I am happy to report after being able to successfully raise the humidity (cleaned the lime out) I have a new growth on my herra! Yay, it is staying warmer now that it is more humid I think using a hot mist humidifier helps too. Thanks for everybodies help Maybe some blooms will follow. I also soaked all the masdies in worm tea, essentials, and something else which i can only remember the name of if I look at the bottle.

I love the little masdie house you have there Kortney. It's cute and functional. I am thinking of using a plastic cake container with a clear dome for mine since I think it needs more humidity. Where did you get the tiny house?

I got it from a friend about four years ago. I had to repaint it though. It works great when there is a fan that works on it lol. I have to get a new fan for it though and then the masdies can move back into their home lol.

my project herradurae was doing "OK" on its original fresh moss medium. Then it started to show stress, ie. yellow tips. I moved it to a plastic web pot with loose AAA sphagnum moss and it is growing gang buster. Also, even in its previous condition it had 2 flower which I missed because it is on the lower tier of a commercial growing stand and my old back doesn't get down there too often...I missed the blooms!
I am basically happy with the material I got with the project. It is doing better or at least as good as what I had bought previously and I am having a ball.
