The plant looks nice and healthy but the mix looks dry and tired. You might want to consider a nice repot on this little trooper.

Hm. What would you suggest I use to repot it in? I have some seedling mix, which seems to be fine bark chips, peat moss, and perlite, maybe some charcoal. (It's sold by the local society). Would that work? I used that the other day to repot a paph and it seems to be doing fine. (somehow I missed the replies to this thread earlier). |

Some masdie roots are very fine and wiry.... while others are like earthworms. It can definitely vary from plant to plant. For the past year, I've been potting all of my masdies in net baskets w/a mix of sphag and shredded coco husk chips...about 50/50 on the mix. This month, with a couple of re-pots, I've added a bit of small tree fern fiber to the mix...to open it up even further. No real reason for my doing this...all has been fine...but I'm always looking for "better" OOPS....I do have 2 pieces of a plant that I broke when I was re-potting it...I put those 2 pieces in loose sphag only because they were so teeny. Only 2 leaves and zero roots. They're so small I'm not even sure if they'll make it. ??

Well, this one died on me in March. I talked to our local judge about my masdies. (he's also one of the best growers in our group...it's almost ridiculously easy to pick out one of his plants out of a line up at our society meetings...find the really big overgrown one that looks like you needed to repot it or divide it 3 years ago and maybe 2 people to carry it in :P) At one of our society meetings he introduced one of his plants with "I have a better looking one at home, but I can't get it out of the greenhouse" We figured out that all of my masdies weren't getting enough airflow and the spagh was getting compacted. I checked on the other masdie which was going downhill at a slightly slower pace and it was like this spagh, roots, spagh. So I moved my masdies to S/H. They're all doing better. I replaced this herradurae with a second in S/H...and I"m having the same problem (just with the heraddurae though). So I'm thinking about giving up this species.
