| My herradurae has bloomed!
...with over 20 flowers covering the plant. It was a HUGE surprise, as I had not even noticed the buds emerging. I was happy. And yeah...the plant itself doesn't look in that great of condition, does it? It's got quite a few dried out tips. I am pretty sure this is from me letting the pot dry out from neglect. It could possibly be from fertilizer. I don't think it really minds though, since it keeps putting out lots of new growths and now this huge blooming. And because I have successfully bloomed my first masdie, I'm considering getting a few more. I've always wanted a few, I just wanted to make sure I wasn't a masdie-killer first. |

Buying more of whatever you just flowered, it's a good strategy snowballs. I've been doing that for years and it all but guarantees you'll end up with plants that you can not only grow but flower as well. It's how I ended up becoming a Paph nut. You've done really well with this Massie. Is it one of the "project" plants form way back when?

Very nice blooming. What's your water quality like there. I have a hard time keeping these alive and I think its the water.

Thanks for all the compliments everybody! Yes, I bought this from jbigio (right? or was it somebody else?) as the project plant. I'm really surprised that mine might be the first to flower. It has been doing nothing but tripling in size over the last few months. I thought all the new growths might be the plant's reaction to being repeatedly dried out, and that it would never flower as long as I kept doing that. In the last two weeks, I have been doing something a little different. I took it out of my phal area and put it under my plumeria tree (it's potted in my growing room and slowly taking over the whole area). I think it might have been getting more humidity from the soil of the plumeria. Our water is pretty high quality here; not too hard and not too soft. Husband says it's good because he doesn't need to do much too it when he uses it to brew beer (or mead, which we just started a batch of last night, yay!). The only thing about our water I don't like is the higher chlorine levels, but I can tell these are much lower than what we had when I lived in Virginia. I'm just a well-water lover, and I don't like when my water smells anything like a pool. Oh...and I haven't repotted it yet. That is, it is still in the original sphag and pot that it came to me in. Oops, I was waaaaaay busy with grad school at the time and told myself it could wait. Now I just have to find something suitable for it as a growing medium besides sphag. I'd love to keep it in sphag, but I don't plant anything else in it so it would probably be a waste to go out and buy a bag. Unless of course...I buy more masdies to go in the sphag. Oooooooh Husband would kill me. Last edited by snowballsarebad; 09-04-2009 at 09:31 AM. Reason: add info |
