| masdie question...
where do masd flower spikes come from ? i ask becuase i was looking at the masd. herr. last night, and noticed that one of the new growths has a teeny tiny little new nubbin down inside its sarong. can these plants be bifoliate? is that another leaf coming up, or could it be a spike?? (as you can tell, i've never had one of these before. thx!

excellent. plant's growing like a weed anyway; we'll see how it likes the summer, though.

Masdevallias are not bifoliates. The inflorescence will arise form inside the small leafy bract that encloses the base of the leaf. I don't know what a sarong is...isnt' it like a bathrobe?...but the name of the structure that encloses the base of the leaf, and from which the infloresence arises is called a "bract." It sounds like your Massie is getting ready to flower!

yes, 'sarong' is the slang for roughly the same structure in a catt; it's the little sheath that eventually dries up. i will have to remember 'bract.' well, fingers crossed that it's a flower; but since it's a baby, i won't be upset if nothing comes of it this time.

actually, that little growth i saw may have been an optical illusion; but i noticed *another* little thing that looks like the photo someone recently posted of what a new spike on a masdie looks like... now i can't find the post. foo. --yes, the photo that fred posted. but i'll let you know if it does anything besides be another growth, just high up the rhizome.
