Hi- newbie here

Hi there,
Newbie here from England, hoping I can join in and learn from you folks.
I have recently been given a Phalaenopsis, and as I know nothing about orchids, I hope to be able to learn about how to look after it properly. I have a suspicion it will not be alone for long, and want to be able to get the care right. I have had some success with african violets in the past, but have never dared try orchids. Also I have never before taken part in forum, so please forgive any errors in etiquette.

Hi earthsong, If you've had success with African Violets, then you should have no problem with orchids! Nice to have you with us. Phals like similar conditions to violets- damp, but not wet. bright indirect light.

Hello and welcome to the forum.

If you think it won't be long before your lone orchid has a bunch of friends, then you have come to the right place. We will certainly encourage you to get more!

I look forward to seeing pictures of your orchid, and the new ones you are bound to get.

Hi,
Many thanks for your kind welcome, and links. I pity the poor Phal for having to put up with me learning. I suspect I see the beginnings of an addiction here, as I have become convinced that the Phal is "lonely", and needs company. Is that just me, or are they actually "happier" in groups?

They are happier in groups. It is good to see that you have learned that so early in your orchid hobby.

A very nice username, poetic and thought provoking. A warning! The addiction can in some cases be for life and a cure does not exist. Welcome aboard.
