Question Newbie need help

Dear all,

I had an orchid last year, but it was dead.

I bought a new one a couple of weeks ago with a lot buds. Some of them bloomed, but a couple of the buds died.

Today, I saw light yellow at the bottom of one leaf. I was so worried, since the orchid I bought last year died not long after the leafs tured yellow.

This afternoon, I quickly removed the orchid from the pot and exam the roots. It seems nothing wrong to the roots. I washed the roots briefly and put it back to the pot.

I searched online, it says one shouldn't re-potting the orchid when it blooms. It seems I did something wrong again. I am worried.

Any of your advice/suggestion is highly appreciated.
Yan

welcome aboard. To give you any advise , i like to know which area do you stay as different area has different advise. Yellow leaves is quite normal part of aging process. Did you expose your plant to too much light? Did you see any pest beneath the leaves?

Yan, to the forum. It would help us to know what type of orchid you own. Did it come with a tag in the pot? Is it a Vanda, Phalaenopsis, Dendrobium or something entirely different? Like Digitalgate said, we need to know your location, but judging from your name he is going to give you good advice for your growing area He is an experienced grower and I am sure he will be able to help you Anyway, glad you are with us---Let us know how your new orchid fares...

nah, I often gave the wrong advise. As all the moderator can testify. But some
are good. As they say, a broken clock tell the time correctly - twice a day.

Yan, if you can go to your profile and update it to show where you live, then we may be able to help you in the future if you have specific problems related to your part of the world.

Can you take a picture of your plant and it's roots so we can see whether it is root rot, crown rot, or some other problem ?

.......and don't worry too much about de-potting the plant to check it's roots. Won't hurt it. Probably most of the folks here do that routinely every time they buy a new orchid. It can save you a lot of grief, especially if the plant is packed in sphagnum moss.

Thanks a lot to everyone. You all are so nice. My orchid is indeed in very bad shape now. ((

I am in Michigan. The type is white butterfly orchid. I was told it's the easiest to grow among all the orchids. Sigh.. (sorry, I am not authorized to post url yet)

Till now, I've having it for about 2 months. It had 12 big flowers. Most flowers bloomed for more than 1 month. Now, only 4 left. I lost 3 buds in the first couple of weeks. One leaf turned yellow and I cut it about 1 month ago. Another leaf got the same problem and I cut it yesterday.

I re-potted twice (I know I shouldn't have done this so often). After the 2nd re-potting, lots of roots turned soft and bad. (( I don't know what can i do now. I dare not water it. Dare not re-potting it. Any suggestions? Can I still save it's life?

sound like what you are describing is a Phaelenopsis. if Lots of root have turn soft and
brown. Rotting has already taking place, you just need to wait for new roots to grow. Mean
while put it into lower light to prevent water loss by transpiration. Hope for the new root
to regrow and fill the pot this is going to take9 to 12 months.

Hi Digitalgate,
Thanks a lot for your advice. Acturally a lot of roots turn bad after the 2nd repotting. I am not sure if I did anything wrong of the 2nd repotting though.

Should I cut the flower stem now? There are still a few nice flowers. The stem seems to be strong.

I thought I probably over-watered the plant, so that the roots turned bad. Now, I haven't been wathering it for more than a week, the surface is very dry. Should I start watering it?

Do you think it's a good idea to move the pot to the bath room? there is no window in the bathroom. I can turn on the lamps a few hours a day to see if the plant will recover. I am not sure if that'll be enough for it.

Sorry for asking so many questions. Any suggestion is highly appreciated.
