New here...

Hey everyone, this is my first post, and I wanted to say Hi. I got into orchids when I moved to Hawaii (Oahu) a few years ago, but I had to move back to Idaho. While I was there, however, I was a member of the Kunia Orchid Society, which was awesome becuase people would bring little orchids for everyone every week, and I was the only 20 something person there, which was fine with me because I get along with much older people better than people my own age (or did at the time) Wow, I am rambling.

Anyway, I want to get a Vanda tricolor suavis on e-bay and I don't know which one to get. There are a few 4in ones growing in 2.5" pots, which I know won't bloom this year, but there is a "mature top cut" with 4" roots. I don't know alot about topcutting vandas, and I don't know if it will bloom or not. They DO NOT have pictures of the acutal plants, which sucks, because you can't see if they are really healthy or not.
Oh well. THere is always later.
Anyway, if anyone could help me out, I would love it.
Thanks.

Hello and welcome to the forum. Glad to have you here. Did you bring your orchids back to the mainland? What do you have now? I look forward to hearing about your orchids soon.

Sorry I am not much help with the Vanda as that is one that I do not grow. There are several of members here that do though so I am sure they will reply soon.

jay-

Yes, of course I brought them back to the mainland, but most of them died because I put them in an extra room in the house that we don't use, and they were out of sight, so they were out of my mind, so I never watered them and that was that. I had about 30 or so, along with some plumeria cuttings that I never could get to root. I only have about 7 of the original ones which include a vanda neostylus lou sneary which smells like vanilla and smells up the whole room. I have a dendrobium (the first orchid I ever owned) It is not a nobile type, it has purple flowers that last 5 months. I bought it in bloom for 5 bux at the swap meet near pearl harbor and the flowers lasted for 5 months after I bought it. Um...I have a few paphs. and a phalenopsis (did not get in HI). I also have a onc. sharry baby that I got from my orchid club, and I have some others that I am too lazy to remember right now.

Hey, Missann! !! Good to have you! I don't grow Vanda's either, but I've read about top-cuts a little. It might take a year for the new root system to become established. Did it say how long ago the cut was taken? That would make a difference.

Anyway, It's nice to meet you! Don't be a stranger!

Welcome Missann! I must say that I would be more inclined to buy a nice Vanda from an orchid show; or if that's not possible, an online nursery as opposed to eBay.

Patti-no, it doesn't say how long ago it was cut.
Rocinante-The seller has a million positive feedbacks, and since I live in a really small town that is at least 2 states away from anywhere that would have an orchid nursery or show, my only sources are the internet, e-bay, and superstores like wal-mart and fred myer (which we all know don't always have the most high quality stuff). We don't even have orchids at the greenhouses. ANyway, I just bought the one from e-bay. The guy has a whole nursery and e-bay store. Is also a power seller, etc . ANyway, if I don't like it, they will pay for return shipping, I think. If, not, I am not out a whole lot of money. We will see how it goes, and I will let you all know.
Oh-sorry it took me a while to get back to you guys. Something is wrong with my internet at home, so I have to log on at work.
