Greetings!

Hello Orchid Geeks!

I am glad to have found this informative forum.

Last year I aquired the orchid addiction....now have about 50. Mostly Catts and Laelias...so far, so good, all seem to be doing well with new growth on this year. My question is I have them under a cover structure with 2 inch slats about 2 inches apart..with mid day shade from an oak. But they do get sun in the morning and the afternoon....should i also cover with a 50% shade cloth? I have noticed a 2in brown mark on a laelea anceps that gets a good amount of afternoon sun this time of year.

I am about 2 miles from the beach...with pretty temperate weather here in santa barbara.

thanks,
karen

Hi KarenK! Glad to have you with us!
I'm sure not the person to ask this question of, since where I live, we had a frost the other night! We're still trying to find spring most days!
I just wanted to say hi! There are a lot of folks from CA, so I'm sure you'll hear soon!

Hi Karenk and !!!

If you can post a pic of the plant. It sounds as if it might just be a case of sunburn, but a pic would be great to verify.

We love pics anyway!!!

Hello and welcome to the forum. You sure live in a nice place to grow orchids, and to buy them from a so many local nurseries.

Hi & welcome to the forum, Karen! You live near many orchid nurseries. I'm sure that doesn't help your addiction.

It sounds like a little sunburn on your Laelia. However, still post a pic of it so we take a better look.

Thank you all for the replies...I will attempt to post some pics later today. This Laelia Anceps is one of the more light exposed plants I have. The problem is, it is a mounted orchid and the roots have moved off the cork slab onto the lattice I have it hanging on. I wonder if it would be a problem to pry it off so I can move it to a more shady place. I hate to disturb...it has 4 spikes coming! I dont want it to burn anymore....i think I will be building some sort of shade today...
