Introducing myself & Deflasking question

Hello everyone! My name is Vanny and I'm an addict. I have over 130 (last count) chids, not including the flasks I recently purchased!!!

I deflasked one bottle today because I saw a brown leaf with tiny white spots on it. I figured that was not good. I tried to attach a picture but this is my first post. They've already been sprayed with Physan20.

My questions are: Is that black stuff on the roots OK?
If not, do I just clip those parts off and spray again with Physan?
How soon do I start spraying the babies with Worm Tea?

Thanks for your help everyone!!!

I guess it did take the picture! Well, I'm attaching some more! How about this little green guy for bug control! He later jumped into one of the Vandas' roots and camouflaged himself into the spanish moss!

Hi PalmCityOrchid and welcome to OrchidGeeks. While I have deflasked a few flasks, I am far from an expert and will bow to others with extensive knowledge.

Where abouts are you in Palm City? Florida correct? My dad lives there. Gorgeous part of Florida!!

Hi Vivienne! Florida is correct. Not far from Martin Highway, by the school. Thanks for your reply!

Sounds like you are 'sort of' close to Dad. He lives in Martin Downs Country Club - or something like that.

What types of orchids do you have? We love pictures!!

Yes, we're close! I have a lot of phals inside the house, cats, dens, odonts, oncs, Brassavolas, Tolumnias (equits), Vandas, and Rhys outside. The Vandas are in spike, will soon flower, one of the equits, the dens are in flower. The C. Iwana Apple Blossom just finished blooming and the Odont with the green lizard is still flowering. My cam's battery just died, I'll post more pics in a few!

Viv, I just saw your atrium - What a beauty! Congrats - I used to live up north (NY/CT) I know how difficult it can be! I noticed you have a tall seedling dome - where can I purchase one of those?

Thanks!

Hello and welcome to the forum!

I wish I could offer advise, but I too have just deflasked my first round of babies. What a learning process.

Cynthia is usually very good with identifying fungus/bacterial problems, maybe she will have a suggestion.

Thanks Jay! Good luck with your babies too! I spent countless hours on the net before plunging in! For the price, I'd be happy if I end up with 4 plants!!!

be careful now. I normally let it sunning a bit in the morning sun- direct. They burn very
easily. 15 min of sunlight does wonderful in getting rid of mold. However, prevention is
alway better than cure.
I don't see your plant in any immediate danger. Control your watering (just enough) , depending which type of hybrid/species. I like them growing new root. The old root don't
bother about it.

Hello and welcome to the forum. Sorry I can't give advice since I'm inexperienced with orchids. I would love to try a flask one of these days. First things first. I need to keep the one I have now alive. Good luck.

hai solay,
if you are adventure enough to try and dont mind 50% of your seedling of your
seedling loss during your care and patience enought to wait for 2 year before you see any
bloom. Then Raising from seedling is for you. I am not discouraging you from trying. That
how you get experience anyway. Just a note of caution .

Vanny - I picked up the tall seedling dome at a local nursery (in Colorado). And thanks for your comments about my atrium. I like to think I'm in Florida when I'm in there. LOL

Next time I'm visiting my dad (not sure when that will ever be), we'll have to do some orchid shopping in the Palm City area. I love it there!

Vivienne - I live in Hammock Creek, less than 2 miles from your Dad's place! Let me know when you're down here. We can even drive down to Miami for a day of orchid shopping - There are so many growers south!!! Can you let me know the name or website of that Colorado nursery - I've been looking for a tall dome, but no luck!!!

That sounds like LOTS of fun!!

The dome is called Super Dome Humidity Cover - and the website nicely stamped on it is Hydrofarm - Grow Lights, Hydroponics and More!

DigitalGate - Thanks for your comments! I took them out to the screened-in pool patio this morning and they got about an hour of early morning sun. I'll make sure to do that every morning so they get air and a good dose of South Florida growing serum - sunlight!

Do you think I should cut off the black roots?

When do you think I should start spraying them with Worm Tea?

Solay - This is my first attempt with a flask. Ruben in Orchids on e-Bay has good prices on them, so I decided to take the plunge! It's work, though - and now I'm worried because I'll be going on vacation for 10 days!!!!
