Guys who received an orchid

Hey guys, I recently received an orchid as a gift from my gf and i have no idea how to take care of it which is why i joined this forum to get more information. I dont want it to die on me because one, it is a very beautiful plant, and 2 my gf will probably get angry if it dies haha. Anyway after researching i did find a few hintful tips. I currently have a Dendrobium, its white with purple dots. The one question i had was that on the base of the plant there is this thing that looks like a finger. Its sort of like a root but its green in color, looks sort of waxy and is extending out of the pot, i would like to know what that if anyone can answer that. Hopefully i will find many useful tips. Thanks Guys.

Dendrobiums have pseudobulbs that sort of look like green upright cigars that are called canes. They have nodes, or rings, about every half inch or so up the cane. It may be a younger pseudobulb as they grow bigger as the plant gets older. Do not cut this off as the older canes contribute to the health of the plant, and they also can bloom again.

As the new growth lengthens, it should start to turn upward. If the new cane looks like it is going to continue to grow sideways, you can gently redirect it with a little twist tie material to pull it toward one of the other canes, but this must be done a little at a time. What you want is verticle canes that don't make the plant want to fall over because their weight is well out board of the pot. Cynthia, Prescott, AZ

most dends like as much light as you can give them. if it hasn't been exposed to high lights as of yet just do it gradually. sounds like a nice one.
