Hi Everyone.
I am a new member to this forum.
Live in sunny Australia and mainly grow Paphs, Aust. Natives and now Phallies.
My first question is: If Phallie roots growing out of the bottom of the pots are damaged or need pruning on repotting to fit back into it new pot.
Will the throw new side growths or will the root just die back and die.

Cheerio
Ron.

Hi Ron
welcome to the forum
I am pleased that you found us we have a great caring bunch of members here full of knowledge about orchids.

my advice to you with the roots would be if they are slightly damages they will heal
if you have alot of roots coming out of the bottom of the pot I would cut the pot away from the roots being careful not to damage them any further and put the plant back into another pot either a slightly deeper pot or may be the next size pot up.
with going to the next size pot up that depends on the amount of growth you have maybe if we could see a picture that would help us even more.

also it would be good for all our orchid geeks if you could go to your UserCP and update your Profile with your Location as we have members from all over the world with different growing conditions that will help us to understand your growing conditions

Phallie Straying roots

Hi Manfred

"Greetings from sunny Sydney.I have Phallies that I have not repotted for 4 years they just keep on growing and flowering roots all over the place outside the pot.

Cheers Manfred"

I have taken the knife to the straying Phallie roots and repotted them into my medium bark mix.
I Will start using coco nuggets small & medium to suit pot size in spring for the next crop coming along.
Some of the old roots out of the bottom of the pot died off and new ones started to grow see Photo 1
Photo No 2 is the same plant with its first flower. I am also trying to learn how to display the flowers in an arch,
the 3rd Photo is of a 3 month old Phallie from flask also in bark.
The only reason I was worried about the roots is when we take them into club nights of show they get damaged badly.
As for growing Paphs I have over a thousand, all from flasks, mainly complex types.
In the last 5 years or so I have gone into a lot of maliopense hybrids with armeniacum, hangianum, micranthum etc and have some very good results so far with many more to flower.

Cheerio
Ron

sell un-flowered Paphipedilums.

Hi Manfred

PHP Code:
Hi Ron
unlike me u sound like a serious grower I collect them
as a hobby got any FS paphs for sale??
cheers Manfred
Sorry but I do not sell un-flowered Paphipedilums.
Seems mean I know but I grow them for my own pleasure and showing at shows. 99% of all my Paphs are grown from flasks.

I sell the ones I do not take a likeing for and the ones that are no good for show.
Just as an example. Of the first 100 Paphs I flowered from growing them from seedling from flasks.
I kept 6 plants as more flowered I picked the best ones and sold the others off. Off about 300 complex that have flowered so far I have kept about 15 plants.
As the can not be sucessfully mericloned in big quanitys a good one is very hard to get.
AU$500 is not an uncommon price for a awarded plants "IF" you can find one!

Cheerio
Ron
