Hi Waldobrits! Welcome to OrchidGeeks! I know that you'll like it here. I too, used to grow a lot of other plants, but got "hooked" recently on orchids. They are addicting! Good to have you with us.

Hey, waldobrits! Welcome to the forum! I also grow Bonsai. I have two Chinese Elms (12 yrs & 24 yrs respectively), one Fukien Tea (8 yrs.), two Ficus (benjamina & another species that I can't recall off the top of my head 15 yrs each, the benjamina I let grow untrained) and a couple of 10 to 20 yr. old Juniper pro nanas. I consider Bonsai my gateway drug 'cause now I've graduated in the last year to orchids which consume less space and are therefore more addictive because there are so many different species!

Thanks for the Welcome Reply!!!

Nice to hear you are also into Bonsai.... i have over 60 trees most of them Thorn trees that grow Naturally in South Africa...
I also spend a lot of my time with Carnivorous plants and have over 200 plants at this stage...
I only started growing Orchids a while ago, but have been interested in them for a long time.... the nice part of it is that Orchids need the same growing conditions as most of my existing plants so they will fall in nicely with them.

But thank you for all your reply 's ...!!!!

Welcome to the forum. Which province in South Africa are you from? Will you be growing your orchids in the house or in a greenhouse or outside? I live in Canada and grow my orchids in the house under lights.

I live in Gauteng. Yes i grow all my plants outside even my carnivorous plants... they suppose to grow in a greenhouse and most of the growers said that they wont make it but i have no problem growing them so yes most of them outside....but not my 2 butterfly Orchids.
I have laid my own sprinkler system and misting system and so far so good...

In general i grow every thing i can that is beauty-full ....but space is a bit of a problem since i stay in a complex and done have a large growing area.

Temperatures over here range between 15-35 in the summer and 5-21 in the winter time... so its not to warm and not to cold in the winter.... so snow is never a problem but now and again we do get a bit of frost.

Here is a few pix of my growing so far.... Sorry for the Pix size ..i had a few problems re-sizing them...

LOL yes i try my best i can do ...
My father has a degree in entomology and so on... and works for Syngenta (they produce all the chemicals for farming and so on).. Well to say i grew up with bugs and plants and as far back as i can remember. LOL Started with Bonsia's when i was about 10 years old and it never stopped from there (my oldest tree is about 30 years old)....LOL my wife always complained about all the plants standing every where but she soon found the love for green things and well ,,,,,i must take care now if i want to take something out of the garden .....i might get to sleep in the spare room...
