Hello from Texas.

Hello everyone!!
I'm very glad I found the site and look forward to gaining tons of information to allow my Phals and Dens to prosper.
I have two Phals that throw great Roots and lovely leaves but alas no blooms in the past two yrs. Probably too much and not the right medium... they are in coconut fiber baskets with bark medium.. very quick draining material.. I use a florescent light (daylite tube high intensity). My newest has bloomed twice and is now budding on the same spike that the existing flowers are on the wane.
So thats my brood. Im sure I will be nudgin the minds of all as we move forward. My Den is cane city.. all green and looking good just no leaves on the one that bloomed so well when I got it.

Enough for now.. Anyway thanks for a great site. I look forward to sharing thoughts and ideas in the future weeks and months.

Adios for now

J

Hello and welcome to the forum!

Do you have pictures of your orchids? We love to see pictures. You mentioned that your phals wouldn't bloom and I wanted to ask a few questions.

How long have you had them since their last bloom?
How close are the phals to the tube light?

If your phals are throwing good roots and leaves but still not flowering then it might be they are not getting enough light.

Some dends lose their leaves, but the old pseudobulbs will still store energy for the whole plant. Dends need a bit more light than a phal to flower, so it might need more light as well.

Look forward to hearing from you.

Hi Justin and welcome to the forum. If you would be so kind and go to the top left of
this post and update your User CP and add your location, it will be helpful to us in
assisting you in your furture posts. Would love to see some pics of your orchids and
tell us a little about your location that you have them in. The failure to rebloom alot of
times is a lighting issue.

I was stationed in San Antonio in the Army (Ft. Sam Houston) many years ago.
Great place but I'm sure it's changed alot since the sixties!!

Updated profile, Im in San Antonio on the NW side near Seaworld.

They are in the kitchen on a counter top against windows that get the eastern sun in the morning supplemented with the CFL 4 tube desk lamp with a daylight rating.

I have three Phals one is blooming as we speak and has sustained the blooms for the past month. There are some new buds appearing on the spikes that are still holding blooms. There are three spikes that are drying having lost their blooms. This is my star at the moment. Second bloom in two yrs. Now that Im writing this , this is the one that gets the most light from the lamp, along with the Den. Hope this gives some visulation albeit mental of the area.

Welcome to the forum Justin! This place is full of information and pictures. But be careful time can just disappear reading and looking at all the posts.
