| Hello New to this forum. Started with orchids yesterday 3-1-2008 when I visited the Greater Akron Orchid Show at Donzells yesterday. Bought a Zygopetalum "blue bird", a vanilla bean "orchid" and a Phalaenopsis (no tag but it is white with purple). I have so many questions! Watering. Sunlight. Repotting! EEK! What did I get myself into! Once I take a look around this site, I'll go post some of my photos. By reading, it looks like I will be in the 'open' category. Joanne      |

| Welcome, Joanne. Someone will be on to help very soon. Everyone here is so helpful. I can tell you that the Phalaenopsis is a great beginner orchid, but I don't know about the others as I am still learning, too.

| Welcome cytojo! This is a great place where we can all learn together. It seems to me the more I know the more questions I have. Thus is the challenge of orchids. A good place to start for culture sheets is American Orchid Society. There is a special section on this forum just for newbies like yourself. You will find lots of good information (called 'stickies') to get you started.

| Welcome! The link phalpal posted is great, and so are all the other people here to get some advice on growing. Also, I believe there are some threads here specifically on how to grow particular species, so you might want to check those out too  Good luck and let us know how everything works out!

| Thanks again for the warm welcome! On the orchid front, I haven't killed anything yet. The Phal and the Zygo seem to be quite happy in the east facing window. The vanilla bean orchid vine I guess is ok, looks happy in the pot. |

| I could not resist the fragrance of this Dendrobium NOID and it has now joined my other orchids. I have decided, for now, to concentrate on fragrant orchids. This could change, but I needed a starting place.  |

| After looking at the Den closer and pulling away some of the moss, I found the plant tag! This Dendrobium is called Thong Chai Gold 25-06/#22. |
