Hello from Orlando

Hi everyone,
I'm new to orchidgeeks and I'm glad I found you. My Mom loved orchids and she passed away last December. My family moved into the house with my dad and now I have orchids to take care of. I found one HUGE Dend. hanging on the fence behind a bunch of weeds. Must have been there for many years. It blessed me with two sprays of purple flowers that smelled wonderful this summer. Now, I've picked up a few more on ebay and on sale at Lowes. I've learned a lot from reading your threads. I'm just trying to keep all my plants happy now. Some aren't too happy with me! Three of my phals have spikes and my vanda's spike dried up. The Vanda seems tricky. Thanks for all your great info! Glad I found this website.

Welcome to the forum Rachel!
Being a in-the-home grower I'm always intrigued by where people in different parts of the country/world can grow orchids outdoors. Post us a pic of your dendrobium one of these days soon - would love to see it! Hope you continue to enjoy yourself here.

Welcome Rachel. You have come to the right place. I believe you can upload your photos once you have made 05 post. So 03 more to go.

I have a few vandas on my own. Lovely flowers when it bloom.

I saw your photos in the gallery. What happen to the slanting Den.?

Vandas are sun loving orchids especially the Terete-leaf Vanda. As for you vanda it loks like a Semi-terete Vanda which is a hybrid between the Strap-leaf & Semi-terete Vandas. These orchids require bright light, and upon hardening can be grown in full sun.

Hi & welcome to forum, Rachel!

In addition to bright light or full sun, Vandas love water and humidity. Therefore, if your vandas are bareroot in a basket, water 1-2 times a day. If it's in a pot with bark, water less frequently (i.e. let potting medium dry before watering again).

Hi everyone,

Thanks for the welcome! The pictures are in the gallery.
I don't know what happened with the slanting dend. When it was full with flowers, it just tilted over. I should have staked it, but, it seems to be fine.
I am going to put the Vanda outside in the sun. It should love the Florida humidity and heat.

Thank you!

Oh, what I wouldn't do for some of that Florida sunshine right now! My daughter is going to do an internship at Disney World from 1/28- 8/15 of this year. She'll be in your back-yard. - Your plants look great- keep up the good work!
