hiya and thanks for all the info

Hello,
I just found this site while looking for info on how to care for my seemingly rather healthy phal who has nonetheless produced two new leaf shoots at it's base. The original plant was unhappy with me several months ago because I didn't water it frequently enough, but now it's flowering again and seems fine.

The last orchid I had, about two and a half years ago, froze to death when I forgot I'd put it outside to get some air (not easy growing healthy plants in an apartment with no balcony, but I try!).

So that's it for honesty - I am an reformed orchid killer ! I've had this one for nearly two years, but I have no idea what to do with it's babies, and if I should replant, when, and in what! Any tips are most welcome!
Thx,
WallisSpice

Welcome to the forum WallisSpice.

How did you manage to get it outside if you don't have a balcony?

In any case, if it is any consolation, that would have been the best naturally induced death for any plant or animal. It would not have suffered much.

I hope you will be labeled as 'orchid saviour' soon

hmmm.. You must have been updating. I did not see the photos first.

That is a very healthy looking plant. You are undoubtedly 'reformed', hehehehe

Hi and welcome to the forum WallisSpice. Looks like you have a Phalaenopsis
orchid. The flowers seem to be finishing their blooming and the plant's leaves
look healthy. I see you have it in a clear plastic pot which is good so you can
monitor the root growth. There are several very good Phal. growers here, so
you will be in good hands with your questions. Good Luck!!

reformed...

I've had more luck since, with all my little (and big) green friends. I think that orchid is the only one I've lost. That's a lie, I also froze a spider plant to death...but now I've got a new one that's making lots of little plants!

As for putting plants outside, our building technically doesn't allow it, but during the day I put plants out on the windowsill. It's wide enough most of the time, and since we have west facing windows it allows for the little guys to get some sun...except that one time when I put the yukka on the windowsill and it fell onto the car hood below - no one noticed, not even the yukka! He's still alive and kicking.

I guess I didn't inherit my mom's black thumb after all.

I doubt that you have a 'black thumb'

I remember reading somewhere in the forum that one should give the plants what they want and they will do the rest. Read about them, ask questions, if at all you are knowledgeable in other plants apply some of your own input and the plants will just grow.

Good luck.
