Smile I just bought my first orchid and have a few questions...

I just bought my first orchid this week, it is a phalaenopsis orchid, and is really pretty (and small). I want to make sure I'm taking care of it, (that's the reason I joined this site). Also, I have a question about it, I just watered it for the first time, and little brown bugs came crawling out of the moss it is planted in. As a new owner, I do not know anything about the medium it is planted in, or if this is normal. Is there anyone who can help me with this?
Thanks!
Amanda

phalaenopsis are a low light level orchid. It is a good choice for growing indoors.

Yours is planted in sphagnum moss which I like for Phals but many people prefer other mediums. Sphagnum keeps the roots wet longer so that you do not need to water very often. Using bark or hytroponic rocks require more frequent waterings. Check the amount of water in the pot before watering because you do not want to keep it too wet for too long. This can encourage root rot.

Spahgnum turns white and very hard as it dries then softens when watered again. You want to water when the medium about half way down is barely damp and the top is becoming scratchy dry. You should be able to feel this far down.

Phals like to be slightly moist all the time but letting it dry completely for a few days is not a problem.

As to the bugs, you do not need to let them get loose in your house. Cinnamin is a harmless remedy that works on many insects. Try sprinkling some on top of the pot.

When you have more questions ask on the Newbie section.

enjoy your orchid you will find them fascinating
