Arrow Paphiopedilum has sealed my fate

I was resisting getting sucked into orchid mania and limited myself to a few phals; beginner plants, right? But I couldn't help buying a a beautiful bargain: a green/white paph with 3-count 'em-3 blooms and a ton of foliage, for the same price as plants with only a few leaves and one bloom. What's next for me? And I really have too much sun for orchids. Help! Best to all of you maniacs whose ranks I may be joining. Diana the dakini

Welcome dakini!

Well so far your thinking is right in line with the rest of us--orchids can always be rationalized somehow. Always nice when we choose one we can probably succeed with, which is probably the case with your lovely paph. But why stop there? Those phals are still calling you and they would all get along together nicely. Glad you're here. Post on!

Sounds like a good buy to me. There's always room for more. Why limit yourself to one type of orchid? Nice to have you on board and welcome.

Hi Diana! You say you have too much sun for orchids.... Hmmmm- Have you read about Cattleyas and Vandas? They LOVE lots of sun! Especially Vandas- Check them out!

All you need is some shade cloth or just hit up the local fabric store and get some sheer fabric. I don't know which will be cheaper, but I found a place online that offers something like 60 percent shade cloth-1o' x 12' for something like 15 bux. NICE. I live where there is way too much sun as well. I think when people think of Idaho, they think of the nice, foresty green northern Idaho, but here in the SE part of the state, it is a DESERT!!! Nothing but sage brush and weeds with a few prickly pear cacti here and there. Gross. I need to move to Portland or Seattle.

Hi Patti, you missed this one. It is another post from 2006 and I assume that it was bumped by Chickita.
