Hello I live in Queensland Australia.I know nothing about orchids at all. I have an orchid that has been attached to a board for about 10 years. I bought it at a local market. During that time it has flowered a couple of times, with long stems of small white flowers.I am not sure what sort of orchid it is, may be a Denrobium. Recently we have had one week of rain and I notice the leaves have become speckled with black dots. But lo and behold a new flower spike. I am very excited about this. I know nothing about orchid care at all and wonder if I should fertilise the plant. I have never fertilised it in all the years I have had it attached to the board in the garden. We have sub tropical weather here, very hot and humid in summer. This winter has been quite cool. It sits under some citrus trees, and we have recently cut these back - perhaps this may have brought more light to the plant - hence the flower spike. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. ~Pat

Thank you so much for my welcome, The orchid is not growing on any special board at all, just one that my husband had in the shed.....Obviously the orchid must have liked it because it is still alive despite our lack of knowledge... and it does deserve much more attention than we have given it..,I will post a picture when I can. ~Pat

Thank you Anton from sunny Queensland. I was wondering if our recent rain was the cause of the black spots on the leaves of this very hardy orchid. The poor plant just lives very well without our intervention. I would like it to regain it's full vigour how it once was. I have never fertilised it and wonder how to do this as it is growing on a board. Would a liquid fertiliser? very weak help? I prefer to post pictures of my orchid - it's a lot prettier than me!! LOL!!.. ~Pat

| Pat, do any of the gardening shops near you stock liquid Worm Wee ? If you can ask around, a lot of us on the forum have begun using it with excellent results. I have a little gradening shop near me run by greenies and they have a worm farm to dispose of the scraps from the next door restaurant, and sell the Worm Wee in 5 litre containers for $3.50 and the money goes to one of the Save the Children type funds, good cause. Others may sell it for a bit more. Have a look on the net and I am sure you'll find someone in Qld who sells it. There is a thread here by one of the commercial growers, Jerry and he sings it's praises and tells of his experiments using it and the side benefits apart from the fertilizing aspect.

Thank you for the advice Anton. At one time I did have a small worm farm myself that produced excellent fertiliser. But it seemed to attract a lot of flies too, so I disposed of the worms. I do still have the housing though - but no worms. So I may even buy more worms if you are all recommending this way of feeding my orchid. ~Pat
