Hello Fred, thank you for the nice welcome. I will post pictures later if thats possible to show what Orchid it is and also the damage I did. I dont know what kind of Orchid, it is or "was" as it was the first Orchid I have ever had.
It was a valentines gift from my Fiance, so needless to say im quite frustrated with myself...

Ok in short. Last week it dropped its last flower after a lovely bloom, while it was dropping it set up another stem to the left of the active stem. Growing good and strong...well. He cut down the old stem and the stick to support it was moved. I about 30 minutes ago, got the little "hair clip"<--it looks like one and went to attach it to it...only to have the new stem break in half

I will post pictures so you can understand better and see how much as come off. And I hate to admit it but I had a little cry *blush*

by the way you have said what had happened with the flower spikes I think that you will still be able to save the plant.

I can understand that you are upset and its fine to have a little cry because the orchid means so much to you.
But I think you will be able to save the orchid its good that you have come here to learn once we know what sort of orchid you have we can direct you to the right culture for your plant.

so chin up all is not lost
the best thing is your plant will flower again for you the next flowering season

to answer the watering question the best way for me to help you with that is to have a look at the Skewer method ( see link ) that is a great guide to watering your orchid

Welcome to the forum, MissConnie.

As fred said it may be possible that it will survive. Since you said 'stem' is broken off, I assume it is a Dendrobium.

Since you have part of the new stem still intact it could grow again.

I am sure you will get more advice from other members soon.

I would not water it right now. But please wait for some experienced members to rule on that. I am sure the wait wouldn't be that long to get their input.

Good luck.

If you would like me to resize to small size I will, but I wanted to make sure you could see the pictures clearly

you have a Phalenonopis orchid
I have included our culture sheet
Orchid Care for Phalenonopis & Paphiopedilum Orchids

another good Phal culture sheet is from the American Orchid Society

Thank you for showing me the care sheet. So due to it being a Phalenonopis Orchid, will it be ok? The stem that I have damaged, will it grow from there or will it try to make a new stem somewhere else? Or do I have to wait until about next year for any sort of regrouth and blooming?
Im sorry to ask so many questions!
I really should have been more careful!

I would just leave the rest of the flower spike for now as it might still give you either more flowers or it may give you a Keiki ( new growth )
It the rest of the flower spike starts to turn brown then cut the spike off about an inch above the base of the spike.

with the right care your Phal will give you more flower spikes in around 8 to 12 months time.

Dont worry about asking all the qusetions that is what we are here for.

please keep us updated

Hi Connie and welcome to OrchidGeeks. Great group of people here.

I think we've all experienced something close to what has happened with your orchid. I agree with fred... leave the spike, you may get more blooms. The plant itself looks very nice so with proper care (using the culture sheet) you can have blooms next season and for years to come.

Hi Miss Connie I'm a Connie too! I am sure your orchid will survive to see another bloom. All of us at one time or another has dropped, cut, or crushed a growth on a plant. A lot of us have cats as well, no more to be said there! Altho devasting to us, not so much to your orchid.
Looking forward to your pictures; we can help you more once we all know exactly what type of orchid and damage we are dealing with.
And Welcome!!
(sorry....didn't see page two!!)

The advice and the care sheet I have seen has helped and now I know I have this place to read and turn to in times of Orchid need, I know my Orchid will be ok....but to make myself feel better...and I guess another excuse...I bought myself another Orchid today! It has three "active stems" with beautiful flowers on! Sorry to be a pic spammer but...Im so excited as its so lovely! I have to take daylight pictures, as its getting dark here now

These pictures arent showing the pink fading and running though the petals.
My poor wounded "one" seems to be "closing" the break gap...as in folding in itself....if that makes sense! *runs to look at it again* yeah it seems to be closing the wound! *YAY*
You guys have all been so lovely and helpful to a newbie to arrived and started freaking out
xxxxxx
