Is this a new plant on my orchid?

Hi everyone, Im new to orchids and have a question about the new plant ,and roots growing on a couple of the orchids I have. First are these seperate plants? And if so , can they be used to start another plant?

Thank You
Mike

This is a keiki, or a new baby plant. When it gets big enough, with roots a couple inches long, you can detach it and plant it separately. Some people leave them on the mother plant. From the looks of it, you have a dendrobium, which is known to produce keikis from the cane. You might also have other types of orchids producing keikis from flower spikes, which phalanopses are known to do.

I usually snip mine off at this stage. I have had success with short roots like these, and even shorter from Den kingianums.

It is not necessary to let them grow long before snipping off. You can either plant it with you present plant or in a seperate small pot by itself.

Mark it with the name of the plant followed by "keiki" and the date you potted it and this will help for future reference if you need to snip more off.

But as Snowballsarebad said, you can leave them on the plant too for effect, and I have done that too on some plants. The decision is yours.
