I just realized that in my enthusiasm to say hi to other new members, I hadn't remembered to introduce
myself! Well, I'm not known for being organized....I am an artist--specifically a silk painter. Believe it or not, I recently began trying to grow a few orchids because I had been researching orchid images on the web for use in a new painting. One thing led to another...and here I am. Also in the back of my mind was finding out recently that someone I knew way back in college now is a commercial orchid grower and orchid judge (or something...what do I know) in Hawaii. That sounded so exotic and intrigued me.
I'm another Coloradoan. I was gratified to read through the intros and find several others from around here. I don't know anyone who grows orchids--maybe I just haven't asked the right people! Makes sense that lots of long winter people would be attracted to orchids; that's what I like about the hobby. I live in a beautiful place, but it's cool and dry and rocky and I can't do much outside growing even in the summer. But the long winters have me itching to see something lovely grow and bloom, and that's where the orchids are so gratifying.
It's a new hobby for me and I have a lot to learn, but that's part of the fun. I wish for a greenhouse, but that isn't likely in the foreseeable future, so I hope to become an adequate windowsill grower.
Anyway, I'm glad there are so many experienced orchid folks around here. I'm already starting to lean on you!
