Cart before the horse

I just realized that in my enthusiasm to say hi to other new members, I hadn't remembered to introduce myself! Well, I'm not known for being organized....I am an artist--specifically a silk painter. Believe it or not, I recently began trying to grow a few orchids because I had been researching orchid images on the web for use in a new painting. One thing led to another...and here I am. Also in the back of my mind was finding out recently that someone I knew way back in college now is a commercial orchid grower and orchid judge (or something...what do I know) in Hawaii. That sounded so exotic and intrigued me.

I'm another Coloradoan. I was gratified to read through the intros and find several others from around here. I don't know anyone who grows orchids--maybe I just haven't asked the right people! Makes sense that lots of long winter people would be attracted to orchids; that's what I like about the hobby. I live in a beautiful place, but it's cool and dry and rocky and I can't do much outside growing even in the summer. But the long winters have me itching to see something lovely grow and bloom, and that's where the orchids are so gratifying.

It's a new hobby for me and I have a lot to learn, but that's part of the fun. I wish for a greenhouse, but that isn't likely in the foreseeable future, so I hope to become an adequate windowsill grower.

Anyway, I'm glad there are so many experienced orchid folks around here. I'm already starting to lean on you!

Do you paint silk scarves and have you sold them to Island Orchids?
I used to work there.
