Hello from the Fog

Hello everyone. I am a newbie from San Francisco. I have a small group of orchids; three Phals, two Dendrobiums, one Miltonia, one Vanda, one very cool Paphiopedilum (I think) and a bunch of Cymbidiums on my balcony that refuse to bloom.

I found this group when I googled Vanda orchid care. (I needed more courage before I repotted it.) I’m looking forward to learning from you and sharing what little I know.

I work in IT and love gadgets. That’s where the ID came from.

Welcome to the forum geekgirl!! You will get lots of good information here. Tell us more about your cymbids, i.e. where you grow them, north south patio, size of plant and pot, medium planted in, time since last flowers......We will try to help you to get them to bloom. The first thing to come to my mind is not enough light and the possibility of having your plant in too big of a pot. Cyms like their roots very crowed.
BTW - pictures help greatly!!! (after you have made 5 posts you can post pics, so just say HI to 4 more of us)

Welcome Geekgirl. Ask lots of questions and have fun.

I'm leaving the Cym repot for one of our more experienced members since I found this forum looking for Cym repot info myself. I plan to tackle that project after this years (hopeful) blooming cycle.

Hi and welcome! Glad to see another bay area person. There are a few of us around. Well, I'm a bay area transplant in central valley, but still considers the bay area as home.

Hope you enjoy your visits here.

Your cymbidiums have to have some steady cool nights, like in the fall months,[if you have them there] and good light to bloom. But not too much light, they will burn easy,so be careful. And WELCOME from someone who used to be a newbie, still somewhat, but thanks to this forum and the wonderful info on the 'net' I'm doing pretty good now! WELCOME,WELCOME,WELCOME!

hello geekgirl!

you have quite an assortment of orchids! i have only cymbidiums and phalaenopsis (phalaenopsi plural?), and have a tough time figuring out how to keep them happy!

what sorts of gadgets are you interested in? is it a hobby thing?

Thank you so much for the warm welcome!

My cymbidiums are in the fog. I live in a windy foggy part of SF. I get sun, but most times not enough. I also think I need to divide and repot one. I need to get back on track with them. I'm afraid I've been a little neglectful.

Phalpal, I'll post pictures once I'm qualified.

Fred, thank you for the links. My Vanda is in a nice new pot and seems happy.

Robb, as far a gadgets go...I'm into electronics (cell phones, iPods, planners, gps - that sort of thing). I also like to cook so I have a ton of tools and kitchen electronics.
