Hi from CA

Hi All,
I've been growing orchids since 1992, when I moved to Sarasota, FL. After returning to CA in 2000, I took some orchid-growing classes and became a charter member of our local orchid society. I have served as VP for two years and am beginning a third. Because we live in cymbidium country, most of my outdoor plants are cymbidiums with laelias, schomburgkias and temperature-tolerant cattleyas. These are under oaks and 50% shade fabric. Indoors, I have the usual paphs, phals and cattleya hybrids. Much of my pleasure comes from experimenting with different media and fertilizers. Another source is the fellowship I experience in the orchid community of growers, vendors and artists who love orchids!

Hi evelinn,

Welcome to the forum. I'd be interested in hearing some of the outcomes of your potting mix experiments. I'm in Melbourne Australia, also a big Cymbidium region.

Which species of Laelia and Schomburgkia perform well for you outside. I am compiling a list of Cattleya relatives that can be grown outside in California.

Which species of Cattleya, Laelia, and Schomburgkia do you grow outside? I am in the process of compiling a list of Cattleya family species that grow out-of-doors in mild climates.

Hi Evelinn,
I too grow mainly cymbidiums, however, where se live in Tasmania, it is too cold to keep my cymbids outside during Autumn and Winter, even the start of Spring!! I usually put my cymbids out in the garden on a stand during the Summer. Anyway, Welcome from a newbee
