Unhappy Hello from Connecticut

Hello all, Im new and having trouble finding my way around the web-site. Can some one tell me if it is alright to remove the Phal orchid from it,s plastic liner pot where it is extremely root-bound and if I can plant it in a regular clay or porceline pot if it has drainage. Thanks so much, Carol

I'd recommend clay over ceramic so the roots can get more air. And there is no problem with repotting. Do a search for repotting and you'll find lots of advice.

As Julie noted it is totally OK to remove your phal from its plastic pot, but note in the for what its worth column that the majority of orchid growers DO have their phals in plastic. You can always insert a plastic pot in a suitable decorator pot and cover the top with spanish moss for aesthetics. Whichever you choose be sure and keep the pot size as small as the roots will fit comfortably in - oversizing the pot often leads to root rot problems because it doesn't dry out soon enough......
