Yet another new orchid grower

Greetings All:
I recently bought my wife an orchid as an alternative to the traditional roses on Valentine's Day. It was a huge success in my choice both in the response from my wife and the new found enjoyment the orchid is bestowing upon us. I am not sure of the type of orchid, it is purplish and is in bloom with more blooms developing.

So I think we are hooked. I have been reading the postings and tips that many of the members have. I have found the technique of using a bamboo skewer as a watering measurement device fascinating. Might a chopstick work as well?

I look forward to reading more posts and obtaining more guidance about the proper care of my plant and future ones.

welcome now that you are hooked plan on redoing your house to make more room for your orchids, if you still have kids at home youmight ask them to move out early as you want to turn thier rooms into growing areas

The bamboo skewers work really well because they come pointed - making it easy to "twist" into the pots. You can get a pack of over a hundred for ninety nine cents around here. I actually break them in half and end up with two for the price of one! Don't know that much about chopsticks, but if they are bamboo they would probably work too - you could break/shape them to fit your needs. Once you have used one for awhile you will find their use no longer needed as you will learn when the plants need watering by just the weight of the pots - but they are a great confirmation tool in the meantime. Enjoy! mike
