Red face Greetings and I've got new phals...

Hi all,

I'm a new to this forum... and am from Singapore. Now cultivating a growing (very fast growing) love for orchids.

There's been this recent Intl Garden Fest here over the past 2 weeks, and I went shopping... Bought my first phals there from a taiwanese stall - two Phal. Liu's rainbow. They were so pretty and looked really dainty so I couldn't resist, although at the back of my mind, I did think they may not be suitable for Sg's hot and humid climate if they were cultivated in Taiwan's nurseries.

Hmmm, a week later all the unopened buds have aborted, and those on the verge of opening have now produced 'deformed' flowers. Sad eh? Wish I know more about how to look after them (and also making the right choices when purchasing).

Well, hope to learn more fr everyone!

Merry Christmas (albeit belated) and a Happy New (Orchid) Year!

Jaxz

I hope you are keeping these in the shade. High temps and too much sun could be a problem, but high temps by themselves are just what Phals like, and what orchid doesn't like humidity. So it is either the sudden change in the environment, or the orchid may have been stressed if you gave it too high a light level.

i agree with Cynthia. It could be just the change in the environment. some orchids will do that....but i'm sure they'll rebloom for you again as soon as they get used to ur conditions...just make sure it's not too hot like Cynthia said.

hi cynthia and swtladyy,

thank you for your replies! the phals are doing 'better' now (I hope!). I've repotted them into diatomite, and placed them in bright shade. No more additional bud blasting. Two of the buds have continued to grow bigger, so I'll wait and see how those blooms turn out

Cheers,
jaxz
