As posted in my last Cathy Beck update, she had dropped all of her leaves but the PB's remained with good color, firm and plump. I had xfered her to s/h that my Psychopsis had came in but outgrew in order to try to save her. She's still in a southern exposure. I went to rewater the s/h pot after letting it dry out and I found something on the younger PB. Its in the same spot as on the old growth. Can this be the start of a spike or possibly a keiki? I know its early yet. If this is a spike, how long do you think before it starts a new PB so it' ll have leaves again?

How exciting! I think it's a spike! I'm waiting for mine to do that! I have new growth, but no spike, yet! Good growing!!

Now that's exciting! Mine has all the leaves and everything, and it's not doing a darn thing!!! Oh I hope it's a spike. I will pray to the orchid gods now...

I am not happy with what I see. You are not going to like what I say, but it is to help you not make the same mistakes again, and with a little luck you may be able to save it.

This plant is in distress from being drowned !!!!

SH involves the roots NOT being saturated in water, the water should be in the bottom of the container with the roots above it, but not drowning in it. The plant should get its moisture from the clay balls not the water.

What you think is new growth is actually the plant's way of trying to survive by creating a new growth to keep itself going.

The dropped leaves also is a sign that the plant is distressed I am afraid.

You need to use less water, and only enough to keep the balls damp, NOT saturated.

I had just watered it before taking the picture. since I had just switched it to s/h I havent left any water pool below the leca. The Den. was in bark until a couple of days prior to the photo.

What are the roots like ?

I have made the same mistake by watering a plant before asking a friend for advice. It gives the wrong impression. Maybe next time put up a pikkie prior to watering so that we can get a true idea of what we are looking at.

This is a very important point for future reference.

What do the roots look like ? I am still worried about the fact that the leaves have dropped off, that is not a good sign in conjunction with poor roots.

Good roots are the main thing to be aware of.

I had at least 6-10 that looked worse then yours, out of the 90 I bought.

I did not lose a single one and all produced new growth at the base not keiki at the top.

It is common for Dens to flower without leaves on young plants recently taken from a grower tray.
