Growing Project Hybrid Plant List

YIPPEE! A hybrid growing project running simultaneous to the species project.

From post#17 (in case you miss it there, it's here and visa versa)
GREAT NEWS.....

Anyone joining in on this project, can order additional and other plants from Jerry's list. There will still be that one special hybrid members here will unanimously agree to get and since Jerry will moderate and guide members through their growing progress, at the same time, he'll guide members joined in this project, with the same guidance on their additions....or not....it's your choice!

.................................................. .................................................. ........................
This is Jerry's post from another thread. I copied it here, in this new forum that Fred set up for the project.

From March 17, 2008:

"I am not out but spent the last few days answering all the private emails I got about this project.

Sharon has been asking me for a detailed list and for several types that are really out of season.

here goes

Here is a list of orchids I can supply currently at a consistent size and in sufficient quantity for this project. The comments match the photos, which I do not want posted on the forum since I do not own all the photos. I will send a zip file of the photos to anyone who requests it. Email me at jerrymeola@gmail.com All plants would be $4.00 except the species Paphs (12.50). Prioity mail is a max of $8.95 per shipment.

Since weight is not a factor a lot can be packed in the box if people want things like heavy hydro rock. I shipped 8 plants and and 3 pounds of hydro in a box this morning. I can get up to a gallon of worm tea and plants in a box. Worm tea without shipping charge is $5 for 4 ounce bottle, $10 for 16 oz, $18 quart, $25 half gallon, $42 gallon.

I do not mind putting supplies in the boxes, or additional plants.

The numbers on the names are only photo references for me and mean nothing as to the plant."

Encyclia
1 (Enc Altrovelumtum x cordigera) x cordigeria_6270.JPG These I raised two seasons ago and and 80% flowered in one year. They bloom reliabily from Easter to Mother's Day. They are very fragrant.
1a Enc. Atronecium - cordigera 'Multi' x Enc. cordigera 'Giant' 1409.JPG These are the one's I purchased for myself last week. They will look like the flower photo, but have been crossed with cordigera again which may increase the flower size. Cordegeria is about the largest Encyclia flower. They do well in pots or mounted.

Bassovola - both are easier to grow and less expensive that the nodosa species which looks just like the Little Stars - the cross with Maiki added the purple spotting and it grows fast. My best 2 inch pot put up 11 new pseudobulbs in six months. Both can flower in a year. They do well in pots, mounted or in baskets.
2 B Little Stars_5608.jpg
2 Bc (Llittle Stars x Maikai) 'Hawaii'_4962.jpg
2 Little Stars (Nodosa x Cordata)71.jpg

Cattleya hybrids - They do well in pots, mounted or in baskets.
These are all types I raise. The first tray is typical of tray size. I thought a seed cross might be fun. The colors can vary greatly but always pretty.
The Sunbow (yellow flower) crossed deckeri (purple) produced three color variations. 20 of the 50 plants bloomed within 6 months. They were frozen in the Janurary freeze and while they lost all their leaves none died. I would order new ones for the members. Size will be typical of the tray in the photo.
3 Blc Halaehi Sunbow x C deckeri_4913.jpg
3 Blc Haleahi Sunbow x C deckeri_2971.jpg
3 Blc Haleahi Sunbow x C deckeri__4461.jpg
This is the actual tray I received this week. I suggest it because it is a new hybrid unregistered and somewhat unknown as to the results we can get. Sunbow is yellow and the other parent is unstable in color but always pretty. Three color variations are pictured.
2 Blc Sunbow x (Latrcia x Pakalani)_6271.JPG
3 C latiaca 'Kodama' x Slc Pokalani Cherry 2867.JPG
3 C Laticem 'Kodami' x Slc Pokaleni 'Cherry' 1.jpg
3 C Laticem 'Kodami' x Slc Pokaleni 'Cherry' 2.jpg
The following are clones and will be very close to the photos. I sell these all the time. Right now the grower is shipping me last years crop and the size is extra large. These are all grown in 2 1/2 inch pots and all are ready for 4 inch pots. The grower is still shipping me oversized plants from last season.
photos number 3 and 4 have flowers that range from 3 1/2 to 4 1/2 inches
3 Blc. Toshie Aoki 'Carmela'.jpg
3 Blc Aloha Case x Hunting Island2_2992.jpg
3 Slc India Rose Sherwood 'Red Face'_4395.jpg
4 Blc Laura Bush.jpg
4 Blc Vida Lee 'Limelight'_4181.jpg
Photos numbered 5 have flowers that range from 6-8 inches, they are as big a plant as the others but may take longer to flower.
5 Blc. Chyong Guu Chaffinch.jpg
5 Blc Chia Lin_1101.jpg
5 Blc Erin Kobayashi 'Amy Chen' AM_AOS.jpg
5 Blc Goldenzelle 'Lemon Chiffon'.jpg
5 Blc Lucille Lundberg 'Yellow Sky'.jpg

Dendrobiums - No common Den-phals offered
6 Den Cathy Beck.jpg - Miniature Den - this photo is of a full grow plant less than three inches high that has flowered twice. It is a University of Hawaii hybrid that may not be available again for years. It was the last tray available and I received it last week so size is consistent. The photo is directly from the tray.
6 Den Cathy Beck_6274.JPG
Noblie Dendrobiums - all are Yamamoto hybrids that are about 8 inches and will flower new winter spring.
6 Den Himezakura 'Sanokku'_5395.jpg flowers as small as 3 inches
6 Den Red Emperor 'Prince'_0152.JPG - fragrant
6 Den Sea Mary 'Snow King'_1573.jpg - lots of flowers
6 Den Spring Dream 'Kumika' _1709.JPG or sometimes 'Apollo' there is not much difference in color
6 Den Upin King 'Seranade'_0196.JPG
6 Den Yellow Song 'Canary'_0132.JPG - lots of flowers
6 Den. Oriental Smiles 'Fantasy'_1107.jpg
6 Dendrobium Yellow Song 'Canary'6072.jpg - a three year old plant that looked undesirable last year and dead all summer. 80 flowers this year.

Oncidium alliance - wrong time of year for small plants
Milt. Earl Dunn_1014.JPG is very warm tolerant and the only oncidium alliance I would recommend this time of year. I have flowered them at 100 degrees in August in spite of Miltonia liking cool temps. The current supply of plants if they have not run out will overflow a 4 inch pot. Average 4-8 pseudobulbs and 18 inches high. The hanging plants are the 2 largest of ten I purchassed 3 months ago.

Phaleanopsis - I did not expect to find any this time of year. These are 4-6 inch leaf spread and will flower in 6-8 months. These I would have to order. They are almost semi-miniatures (8 inch plants 3-3 1/2 inch flowers) the flowers branch heavily
9 Phal Brother Budda x Brother Pumpkin_2080.jpg
9 Phal Naples nights x Petite rose x Glad melinda.jpg - mottled leaves as well
9 Phal Sogo Grap.jpg
9 Phal Tapei gold x Brother paradise.jpg

Papheopedilum
Species are scarce in uniform size for a project like this but delanti and barbatum are available in 2 1/2 inch pots - near blooming size, however, paphs bloom whenever there is no way to predict blooming. I do not have a photo of barbartum. These I would have to order
91 Paph_delenatii.jpg

(Enc Altrovelumtum x cordigera) x cordigeria
Enc. Atronecium - cordigera 'Multi' x Enc. cordigera 'Giant'
Phal Naples nights x Petite rose x Glad melinda

What are these? The names are problematic. I know of an Encyclia Atroniceum (cordigera x phonecia) so I'm guessing that's just a misspelling, but is it crossed with a line bred cordigera and thus: Enc. Atroniceum (cordigera 'Multi' x Enc. cordigera 'Giant') or is it crossed with cordigera then again back crossed to another cordigera and thus: Enc. (Atroniceum x cordigera 'Multi') x Enc. cordigera 'Giant' ?

The same with the Phals, which order are the parents bred?

Also I've not found any reference to Enc Altrovelumtum, just not sure what that is.

Yeahh!! I like hybrids over species. If we decide on one, but theres a 2nd one we'd really like, can we get the same rate on the 2nd plant if its added onto our project orchid? Or are these rates only available for the project orchid?

The response is getting long. I hope everyone has the patience to read them all.

I have just gotten a response from Fred about a suggestion I had and he agrees to let me post it here.

I will allow everyone on the project to select the top choice and a second choice for $4.00 each no restrictions. This gives everyone something if they do not care for the first choice.

Fred said it was OK to offer to everyone as many of the others as they want for $6.00 each. I can pack 8-10 plants in a flat rate mail box for $8.95 making all the extras ship free.

Sandra suggested that we take the top five selections and then have a poll of only these choices. That sounds reasonable.

There are no high light plants and most of the choices have been either for a medium light plant or a Phal. There will probably be enough members choosing one of each to have two projects going at once at two different light levels.

I will be buying the top plants fresh so that I have enough of the same condition for everyone to receive a comparable plant. The extras will come from inventory as long as they last. I will be buying the top Phal whether it is the top plant or not. I need some for inventory anyway. I also will be buying another 100 Encyclia so there will be plenty. The Den Cathy Beck are in stock (80 pieces) so no problem. By the way the photo which I could not load to the forum today is a plant 3 inches high with two flower stem remnants from prior flowers.

Here is a link to the extract from the University of Hawaii on the development of Den Cathy Beck. It makes interesting reading, since they are a source we can believe. There is a photo in the article.

kmarch you know I can not type and my when I put together a list at 4 AM what can you expect.

The correct name for the Encyclia is listed as
Epi Atroneceum 'Mother's Day' x Enc cordigera 'Chocolate Violets'

This grower crosses these back and forth so much I have to read the tags to be exact. I thought these were crossed back again to cordigera but apparently this tray is not. I may have been looking at last year's stock.

The color and scent of the flowers is always about the same, making me wonder why so many different crosses. Based on the size, they may just be one years crossing taking years to distribute. They will look very much like the photo and every cross has been fragrant although some have been fragrant in the morning and some in the afternoon.

Wow, thanks for the kind offer Jerry. My collection is going to be crazy after I get the project plants and all the extra plants that I have my eye on from Jerry and Oak Hill, on top of that I just ordered a Neofinetia 'Benisuzme' from New World. You big ol bunch of enablers lol, soon me and the kids will have to exist on bark cause I have plenty of that.

Jerry, Oh wow! Now I'm gonna have to order a few.... You said that you could send worm tea also. I need more and I should get it from you! How many plants can you fit with a quart of worm tea? (How many clowns fit in a Volkswagon) I can't wait untill the official plant is chosen so that I can place my order! I'm getting a Cathy Beck for sure.

Wow I won't let this offer pass by . I have my eyes on a few . It seems like a lot of you know how the ordering process work. Who do I submit the list of plants to and place the order? Little puzzled on this one . And would you be able to combine the shipping with the top pick from species growing project?

everything needs to be one shipment to save shipping. I hate paying too much for shipping.

The postal service has a box 11-7/8" x 3-3/8" x 13-5/8" and whatever we put in it is one rate of $8.95 for 2 day priority mail regardless of weight, which is why it is great for ordering heavy items.

A 2 inch pot with an 8 inch plant rolls into a cylinder 2x10 inches. A quart of worm tea is about twice that. I have never had an order of all 2 inch plants but I estimate that I can get about 14 in a box- 2 rows of 7 with the second row inverted between the first row.

I did an order last week with 4 pounds of hydro rock (equal to 1/2 gal tea bottle) 6 2 inch pots and 2 4 inch Oncidium 15 inches high in one of these boxes.

You have me curious to how much I can do. It is packing like this on the shipments I receive, that gets my cost down. I have 12 Grammophylum in spike coming today from Hawaii, which probably weigh 6-7 pounds each and a half dozen blooming Mastavallia and the shipping Fed Ex overnight is only $71. Heck the cardboard box is $20, which is why the free boxes from the post office are so nice. It would be even less if I took a normal size order of triple the weight but I did not want to chance missing the Grammophylum. They sold out of the budded Den ansonum before I called.

I will set up an ordering system when we get closer. I will try to ship everyone the same Monday so that there is no danger of being delayed over a weekend.

Thank you so much, Jerry. I look forward to getting down to business and fun! I looked at the pictures today and now can't make up my mind. Oooooooooooo, I'm wringing my hands in anticipation. What a great time to be doing this for me, too. Easter is Sunday and the retreat back up north starts almost immediately. TIME ON MY HANDS....YEAH!

I've been running around trying to get my son back into college and now I have a few spare minutes to post my choices. Here goes: 1) Phal. Brother Buddha x Brother Pumpkin 2) Den. Oriental Smile 'Fantasy' and last but not least 3) Phal. Naples nights x Petite rose x Glad melinda

Actually, Sandra, I like this list much better than the list of species. Can I withdraw from the species program and just do hybrids?

When can we order??

I updated the voting list today and am using this post to mark my place for any additions. It looks like a close race for the top five from which we will poll.

I have a mailing list of over 700 people that I am going to invite to join us. Maybe we will get some new members as well.

Oooh, my son just went back to college today (last quarter, we hope!)--that means I have another window with room for about five more orchids And the weather here is finally moderating, so orchids from Florida will not be in for such a shock.

Thanks for all your generosity and help, Jerry! Be sure to keep us up to date on when we can order. I can hardly wait...

Oh good! Now that I've at least ordered my species project I can calm down. I can't wait for the Cathy Beck. I'm very curious to grow that little darlin'. There are a few that I want from him as well as some more worm tea. I'm looking forward to these experiments. Thanks again Sandra, Jerry & Fred. This is really cool.

I am usually a lurker here but read this thread today with interest. I am a novice with orchids but would love to try growing something besides the rescue phals I buy from a big box store. Is there a way to view photos of the plants being considered? Or should we Google for them?

I'd love something fragrant--and I like the big Cattleya-type flowers
Thanks!

I posted an invite to newbies earlier today. I found finding this project without having been in it from the start is hard. We will have to consider that for future events.

I also sent out an invite to join the forum and participate to 700 people on my mailing list. Maybe we will get new members as well.

Currently Den Cathy Beck has 11 votes
The Encyclia 8
and Phal Naples Night 8

so unless a bunch of people join it looks like it will be among these three for the project.

I will see how many additional people join over the weekend and try to finalize it by Monday or Tuesday and ship the following week.

Thanks, Jerry. I received your email and the photos. How to decide ???

I would like to participate and grow the top choice, but I would also love to purchase something else from my list. (I'm going on purely looks with my choices, since I don't know enough about orchids to make an informed choice!)

patticake, there will be that one orchid everyone in on the project, agrees to get. All the other orchids Jerry has listed, are available to members as well, some in limited quantities. So as many as you request and as many as Jerry has, is what you'll receive. Also, the project will probably include more than just the most popular orchid.

Ok, ok so why is everyone choosing three? Out of the three you select the orchid that came up the most as the 'main' orchid?

Jerry, so aside from the project orchid what is the amount of plants a person can order from you?

As far as that goes how will we contact you about the order pertaining to the plants and/or worm tea etc.?

Thanks again you guys...Jerry, Sandra, and Fred.

Okay, I'm late and I can't see the pictures so I'm not even going to try to choose any orchids (not sure it matters really, haven't seen too many orchids I didn't like), can I join in on this? I'm not sure what my chances are of being able to successfully grow a couple of hybrids but I'd love to try, and since we're getting good instructions, I surely have a chance!

It is a shame we lost all the discussion of the earlier threads.
You can buy the winning orchid and another at $4 each and unlimited others at $6

I may look around the greenhouse and see what other odds and ends I can discount to make space.

For those that like bigger plants I got 12 four foot high Gramatophyllum this week in bloom. That is a sight. My wife asked if she could landscape the pool with them. Shipping was rough they weight 8 pounds each. and Mine from last year are even bigger.

Is it too late to join, or are we voting which top 3 or 4 orchids to use for this project?

Arlene, I think we are getting ready to vote on the top three, but you can join anytime. I say go ahead and pick three plants that you like, it may not be too late.

Yeah, Arlene, I don't think the membership in this project is actually closed until the voting is over and the orchids are shipped I plan on ordering about five orchids and,of course, not all will be project winners Glad to have you join...

If that's the case, then I vote for these:

Den. Cathy Beck
Phal. Naples night
Blc. Haleahi Sunbow x C deckeri

Knowing that Den. Cathy Beck and Phal. Naples night are winners, I can hardly wait to find out which will be the third plant.

I smelled the Den Emperor 'Prince'...it smells delicious.

I am going nuts I think I may go with some 8 plants. I mean there are a lot of quality choices...that Sogo Grape looks like a VandaPhal.

Vivienne

I carry just about everything. I will make a list of the items that most people would like, such as worm tea, hydroponic stone, bark, perlite, charcoal etc that will fit in the flat rate box. It would be freight free for whatever we can get in the flat rate box. Most of this I buy in bulk and will repackage smaller for members. This reduces the price a lot.

items like baskets may not fit if in the flat rate boxes if over 4 inches, and would have to be mailed separately.

I am making a mailing list on those who have sent me their email addresses for photos. Not everyone has sent an email. Occasionally an email may be easier to distribute than a post here. I will probably email and post so that no one misses anything.

The currently voting has these as the top three

Den Cathy Beck - 15
Phal Naples Nights 11
Encyclia 10

They are far ahead of the others. Sandra thinks we do not need a poll based on these numbers. What do the members think?

I already bought 50-150 of each this week for inventory so they are all suitable for the project

Den Cathy Beck are all 2 mature bulbs that have previously flowered once or twice each. The old cut flower stems are attached. They have been treated with superthrive and Worm Tea

Phal Naples Nights arrived yesterday. They are large. 7 of the 50 were in spike (small 1/4 to 1 1/2 inch spikes). All should spike soon. They will get Worm Tea today. The roots are growing strong so I will skip superthrive

The Encyclia are a little early for flowers (they only flower in April to May) but the first has a spike already. I guaranteed flowering for next year but most are two bulb plants (normally I only get one bulb for this price) so certainly blooming size. I usually flower 15% of single bulbs and 85% of the rest in a year. Re-potting these may effect their ability to flower this year, but that is part of the project. We want to see the differences. The have all had superthrive and Worm Tea.

This keeps everyone starting even.

I do not know if this knowledge will further influence anyone's choice. So let us know if you want a poll.

There is no need to limit the project to one plant. We just did not want to make it mandatory to have more than one. I will segregate a number of the plants and post results as a control group on at least these three.

I dont mind doing a poll for the final choice. Considering everyone had their own fav's from the main bunch, they may change their minds given these 3 choices. Plus it gives me a chance to do some ot at work to get up a better order.

As a newbie my first choice is one that only Marcia_pa also chose

Blc. Chyong Guu Chaffinch [Easy Grower - Blooms 2-3 times a year--sold me]

I also like

Den. Cathy Beck
Enc. Atronecium

When it come to ordering other plants the night fragrant B. Little Stars has caught my interest.

Thanks for all you've done and will do, Jerry. I'm really stoked about the project.

Jerry - could you clarify something? If we use any or all three of the plants that you have noted for the project do you have any of the other plants on your original list as available for members to also include with their order? I have tried to read between the lines and it seems to me like maybe your original list included plants that you could get for the project, but wouldn't necessarily be available unless you ordered for the project. Am I reading this correctly? Thanks!

I think with the numbers like that on those three plants alone, I wouldn't think a poll would be necessary. Mike does have a good question though and I even wondered if other members wanted other plants on the list that's not getting the higher votes, would you have to order those as well.

Jerry, with the numbers I would agree another poll is not necessary.....but whatever everyone else wants is good with me!!! I am anxious to sneek another orchid (or two or three) into the house!
