Once in a while someone will start a growing project up where we all order from the same orchid supplier after we take a vote on what orchids we'd prefer to try. I hope who ever does the next one suggests its a Paph since they do not require high light. that will make it easier for most members to participate. Maybe Jerry could get some plugs in that we can all go in on. Or we can order from Olympic orchids.

Coconut orchid Maxillaria tenuifolia Chocolate orchid Onc. Sharry Baby Trgt fasciata

I would totally be in too. I never seem to catch the posts on time. a Catt would be cool too. I have not been a huge fan so far so maybe a growing project could get me into them. :P

We actually just started a growing project a couple of weeks ago, and you are welcome to join! If you go to the main forum there is a section that is titled "Orchidgeeks Growing Project #3 2011". Below it are the four plants that were selected for the project. Many of the geeks located in the US purchased our plants from Oak Hill Gardens because they had lots of seedlings available.

If you'd like to join, go ahead and purchase one (or more... ) of the project plants and make your own post in the appropriate section.

I'm not having much luck finding any of the listed plants on the project in seedling form. Oak Hill only listed Phalaenopsis Violacea v.Malaysia, does this count Either that or I'm missing something, searched so many Orchid nurseries, have headache I may have to wait for the next project anyway, a little short of funds, which is O.K. I'm not going anywhere, you folks are so much fun

If a future "project" includes Laelia purpurata, please count me "in" ! If I don't already have a plant which qualifies by size, I will obtain one!

Greybeard, here are links to all four project plants in the correct size. Some of them have been renamed, which is probably why you're having trouble finding them.

Cattleya coccinea

Phalaenopsis violacea

Prosthechea fragrans

Sedirea japonica

No problem. I find that when I'm searching for an orchid on a grower's site, it's easiest for me to plug in part of the name rather than the whole thing (for example, I searched for "japonica" and "coccinea"). This eliminates spelling mistakes on my part, and gives more results. Then I can find the plant I'm looking for.

Nancy,
As I recall, the most recent discussion included the Laelia purpurata in a 3.5" pot.

FWIW, I just flowered a seedling in two years which was potted/remains in precisely that size upon arrival. I will "post" a foto in the near future....
