Newbie "El Natural" Philippines

Mabuhay!

Hi everyone. I guess this is the place where i will write my journey as an avid lover of nature particularly orchids. (and some bromeliads, tillandsias, trees and aquatic plants). So this is kinda like a project since i really have no way of knowing whether my orchids will eventually like the environ i am putting them in.

Anyway, before anything else, i would be posting pics of my orchids that blossomed a couple of moons ago. In my first post, i promised that i'm going to take pics of my garden but just before i hit the keyboard i decided to transfer some orchids to its new location and i just bought a jackfruit seedling to which i transferred to its final location.. I'll be posting pics of my garden maybe sometime next week but i've got to warn you that its just a simple, chaotic garden that i guess, i'm the only person in the world who enjoys it. hehehehehhe. Of course, any suggestinos/advises are very much welcome. :shakehand

I used to have many orchids during my first years of collecting but due to school work and when i started working for the money : laugh:this hobby of mine kinda took the backseat. I swear I had quite a number of beauties back then. But anyway, i hope its not to late to somehow start all over again. right?!

ooh wow, very cool,

i am loving this, just a quick post for now because i really must get to bed,
but so far, i am really enjoying the tour. and there is nothing wrong with a chaotic garden, if there was, then i would be in trouble.

thank you so much for the compliment my friend. Can you post me a link to your beautiful collection? With my ferns, aside from looking it up in the internet and asking the sellers their opinions regarding its cultural requirements, i always make sure that they are watered almost everyday especially when its hot, not full sun, sometimes i apply ferts, and if they like soil, i always use bag soils especially with coconut fibers...and then i pray to God that he let my plants live. :fingers crossed: hehehe I love ferns but there are some that can really be very very pricey and way out of reach of my pockets. hehehehhee

OTs...
So before i attend to a meeting this afternoon, i just took pictures of my fruit seedlinds and you all know its main purpose in the garden. hehehhee

a jackfruit or locally known to us as "langka"
http://usera.ImageCave.com/surotswar...1-P9150010.JPG

a guyabano or graviola or sour sop
http://usera.ImageCave.com/surotswar...5-P9150003.JPG

of course my favorite of all, a starfruit or locally known to us as "kayomito". I put a stake because i want it to grow straight up and as much as possible would still let sunlight enter the garden grounds. But starfruits are massive trees.
http://usera.ImageCave.com/surotswar...4-P9150006.JPG

I forgot to add pictures of my rambutan. hahaahhaahha and pine trees as well. hahhaha. oh dear!!! what have i gotten myself into.

My phals just wants to say hello to you all and thank you ...till next time

recent kadayawan festival

Mabuhay!

Hey folks, i would like to share with you a blog about the Kadayawan festival where our National Orchid the "Waling-Waling" will always be the queen of vandas.

http://pinoytrees.blogspot.com/2011/...ng-waling.html

PS
KADAYAWAN is a Bagobo term for celebration of a bountiful harvest, Kadayawan is derived from the aboriginal word "dayao" which means good or "madayaw," things that are of great value or is profitable, superior or beneficial.

Enjoy.

Needing help in identification and an orchid to share

Mabuhay!

Hi everyone. I would like to seek your help in identifying this plant, the one with a star-shaped leaves. It's usually sold in department stores and considered to be a lucky plant. I would like to know what it is. I thank you in advance for any response.

A Cleisostoma Uraiense. This baby makes me smile, she's quite temperamental. First time to bloom in my care and its really a very slow grower. The flowers just makes me laugh.: laugh:

Thank you all for reading/browsing/participating and complimenting my garden. You people are the reason for always keeping me inspired how to further improve my babies. Thank you.

Anyhow, i've seen this orchid before in some threads but i forgot the name. I just bought this from a place called "Baclaran" where i got it very cheap. I know that this orchid can get difficult in the lowlands. Any inputs are highly appreciated. thanks.

According to the internet it flowers and kinda pinkish but i don't know if it sheds leaves. May i ask why you asked that question?

thanks

switchblade 09-25-2011 02:25 PM

because the leaves look like the leaves of a Poui Tree. I have a yellow variety and the pink variety grows all along my region. By the way are the flowers single or double?

All your plants look so happy, so free!!!
You are so lucky to be able to grow them outside, just like they like it....:yup:
If you don't know how lucky you are....:), just come to Denver and try to grow them here.....:)....
One day (I am dreaming)...I'll take all my orchids and move to the place where they could be happy outside........meanwhile they will have to share my house with me....
Actually, they have most of the house....:)

Cool, ang dami mong tanim na halaman. English translation-Cool, you have so many plants.

Ang meron lang ako tatlong pirasong phalaenopsis. Yung 2 seedlings lang tas yung isa may spike pero walang bulaklak.- English translation.I only have 3 phalaenopsis. The 2 are still seedlings while the other one has a spike on it but does not have any buds or flowers. Dude san kaya maganda bumili ng mga phalaenopsis? English translation- Where can I buy phalaenopsis? Yung pwedeng e-ship papuntang Zamboanga City.
I am from Zamboanga City; hence, there are also many orchids here. In fact, one of the highlights of the recently concluded city festival called the Zamboanga Hermosa Festival is the showcase of orchids which are for sale but most orchids that were there were dendrobiums and cattleyas. I wish there were more phalaenopsis and pansy orchids.

Thank you all for the comments.

@arthur...hi kabayan. :woot: I love Zamboanga City, i bet you have a euanthe sanderiana? or our famous waling-waling. HOw come you only have 3 phalaenopsis? i love phalaenopsis but the beautiful ones are very pricey and maybe when i have enough moolah i'll buy the exotic looking ones. I'm not sure with pansy orchids because i think they will only thrive in cities like Baguio and Tagaytay unless you have an area like it in Zambo. Are you in the city proper? sometimes my work brings me to Zambo but I only stay in the city proper. Anyway, i'm glad to have found another kababayan ("fellow Filipino)

Anyway, current bloomers in my garden. my blc keowee in full bloom and 2 NOIDS.

Enjoy.

Godbless

arthurbellisario 10-16-2011 11:44 AM

Yes, there are a lot of waling-waling here too. I only have three because I'm new to being an orchid fanatic. Hehehe. I 2 seedlings and 1 semi-matured plant with a spike but no bloom. The spike has already been cut when I bought it. Maybe it already bloomed so they cut it.

Also I do live in the city proper. If you visit Zamboanga I advise you to go to Plaza Pershing. Adjacent to that area is where they sell a lot of orchids and other ornamental plants and even fruit trees. Another location is near City hall.
