| Cathy Beck update Well It hasn't bloomed yet, maybe from adjusting to the new environment? But so far it seems to be doing good. The new growth has grown just a hair. The leaves look like they are beginning to shrivel a little but the canes look good and I added a skewer. The very top bud was bunched up with the one right below it so they are starting to spread out and I thing the spike has gotten a little taller.

| It is finally Happening!!!! Well, I am one happy kid today, lol! My Bad day turned around when I got home from work! Check It!: you can see it beginning to open! It is more reddish like the one in Jerry's picture (btw Jerry is right). This thing has taken of if you look closely just beneath the new growth you can see one of the new roots it has developed in the last week. And that's not all, It has something growing inside that new growth, I think it's a new leaf. Yay! Me so happy! Hee Hee And I was so worried that they would all blast because the last few days have been pretty dry except during the sporadic hail and rain. There are more pictures, I'm waiting for it to upload I'm on dial up tonite I got a huge humidifier at a garage sale outputs 12 gal in 24 hrs for two bucks! And I got two air purifiers for 50 cents a piece, just needs new filters. ok its done nowIt's kinda hard to tell how reddish the bloom is from the picture because of the lighting but it is not as pink as some of the pictures make it look. I litterally screamed when I turned around and saw that it was beginning to open. I had been home for 5 hours before I noticed, shame on me! I could have posted this sooner! I am in total suspense waiting for the rest to open! Jerry Thanks a bunch! With all the craziness going on between school, work, and home this has been a real pick me up! ok, that's all for tonite! ![]() ![]() ![]()

This might sound like a silly question, but is Den Cathy Beck deciduous?

I have no clue about being deciduous, but the bloom really is starting out looking like kinganium (sp?). Truly fascinating! Can you get some more pics? !!!

Kortney, you think the blooms will change on yours too? Very interested to see. If it does. I'm getting one for sure!!! Please post more updates as it progresses. Thanks.

Den Cathy Beck is not deciduous. I did see literature that growing any cane Dendrobium in too dry or too cool a situation will cause it to drop leaves as if it was deciduous. I also find that Dendrobiums younger than three years old lose a lot more leavers than older plants. All the details about it are at this location Hawaiian Floral Nursery: University of Hawaii cultivars Peak flowering season for this plant is Oct to Feb.

Congratulation, Kortney! I'm so excited for you! I thought mine was getting a spike, but the tiny bump still sits there.... ![]() I can't wait to see it open all the way!

I know you guys have been waiting for yesterday's pictures, sorry. I think there were some server problems this morning. I am so happy! It's turned a little more pink. But it is not quite as pink as the pictures look. I have a hard time getting the colors on the picture to match the actual color of things (old kodak easyshare). I also wanted to put this in here so you can see how much the roots have grown since I repotted it upon arrival. The new growth is growing very well too! ok back to the flower. I didn't expect to progress this quickly. When I noticed it was opening on tuesday I figured by the weekend it would be fully open. But at this rate I am thinking tomarrow or friday.

Wow, I know I already said it but this opening so quickly, the next bud up started to open last night. So I have pictures from yesterday and the top is already starting to curl and the bottom is starting to curve backwards, nice! I absolutely love and adore this plant. If you look at the earlier pictures you can see a big difference in shape! You can see the difference the second picture here was from the day before!

There are four blooms all together. I will try to take another picture with a solid background again this weekend with better lighting and remove the tag, lol! I just love it. Right now the last flower is all the way open but hasn't started twisting yet and is still a little more red than the others.

I have another update! There is a new cane nub starting off of the most recent cane! I am wondering if it will bloom again this year of the most recent cane. Her roots are wanting badly to grow right into my little star's pot, lol! Should I repot soon? I really don't want to disturb her. Some of her roots made it into the mix but the majority are on top and over the edge of the pot now.

Cathy Beck is still in the same pot and ended up with an additional new growth just before winter time. Now she has her first new growth of the year around an inch or so so far! I think she will need repotted soon though because her roots are all over the place!

Kortney, your Cathy Beck is looking great. Mine hasn't even made a new growth but I see a little nub coming in that I'm hoping is a spike. I think I would re-pot but I'm not an expert on this. What have you been doing to get such healthy roots?

they just grew that way lol. I had no a/c most of the summer last year lol. That last pictyre is from last year. I'll go take a new picture right now lol! It may have been the potting mix too though lol.

We are up to 5 canes on Cathy Beck now! It may be to early to tell but I think there may a spike emerging!!!! And she is in serial (another south park reference for old time's sake lol) need of repotting.

Not sure but both times mine spiked it came from the side not the center of the growths. Keep our fingers crossed it's a spike and not a leaf. Either way your Cathy Beck looks great.

Really? Maybe if it's not a spike it will do that then lol. Mine had already spiked when I got it in the mail but it came from between the leaves.

My Cathy Beck is blooming for the second time this year. Mine looks so much smaller than yours. I kept mine in the original (very small) pot that it came in and just added some hydroton. I will post a picture when I get a chance.
|
| ||||
|
ine is still in the original pot too but I think I ned to move it up to the next pot size so the roots can grow better. Last year thy grew out and over the edges of the pot but this year I haven't seen as much as root growth. I a sure the mix has broken down a bit too so that could be it also but there not room for the next new growth to grow into the mix now lol.

LoL, I don't know what the deal is with mine. It also grew new growths, but the older canes dropped all the leaves and is now bald. The new canes look great, but no spikes, Just roots. I think it might be because of too much light, but don't know for sure. I'll have to update my tread.

Yay! Awesome news! What I though in post number 56 was a spike starting actually wasn't but now there is one coming out of that nub haha. And two others! I have dead batteries for my camera so I will go out to get some batteries later tonight. The funny thing is one spike is coming out from in between the top most leaves on the newest cane and the two older canes have ones shooting out the sides below the leaves lol.

Okay.. I am smacking myself in the forehead over this. I, for some stupid reason, waited to water Cathy Beck until she started shriveling a little. I dunno why, I never let that happen lol. But I think one of the spikes may have suffered from it

oops just realised i posted the pics of it in flower on a new thread when i posted them last summer! Is that something somebody can move it to this thread if its not to late and just insert it between this post and the previous one? OOPS sorry guys! Update: Lost a few leaves, 5 growths now with a new one growing quickly! Anticipating blooms this year. So i think this one is a winner for me. I am so happy with it and absolutely adore her! I'll be moving her outside soon and putting her in the exact same place as i did last year and hoping for a bigger show. The old roots are looking pretty dry but they turn green when i water it. She definitely needs as soon as i see a root pop out of the new growth! she is still in the original pot but has had a mix change once.
