Flowers change color after a few days

At least one member commented that the previous posted flower photo did not look like the one I took off the INTERNET.

In this photo you can see the one day old flower at the top is maroon but the older flowers change to a lavender.

Colour change? What about the complete change in the form of the flower? The flower on top looks like a kingianum hybrid while the flower on the bottom looks like an antelope type. And difference is just that the top one isn't open all the way? Wow, that's a prety dramatic difference.

Jerry, even nicer than what I thought, can't wait!

Before you offered these for sale to the members, didn't you once post pics of the Kathy Beck, about a year ago? I could swear I remember seeing it a long time ago and wanting one, then. I don't think mine is going to have blooms anytime soon. It's busy growing bulbs now and typically (at least with all my other Dend's) get new growth after flowering. Is that a fair assumption?

Sandra,

I had not seen your post, but no it was not my photo and I do not post photos that belong to others on the internet. This plant is the first I have to photograph.

I did a post on other canaculatum hybribs and that is probably what you are remembering.

Several look like the Cathy Beck but are not miniatures growing up to 18-20 inches.

Jerry...it's two different flowers...not a color change...a flower change.
What on earth..?

Would you guys consider this to have morphing properties with the blooms literally changing form and color? What would you call that?

I don't have a clue, Jenny......miracle might be an operative word. I don't know, I never heard of one flower turning into another. It's a neat idea though. I like it!!

Does this even have anything similar to D. kingianum in it's background. I have looked at this 3 or 4 times, and they look like they are all on the same infloresence. Just very strange to me to say the least, as the rest of the flowers look like each other, and there is this odd ball. Now I am really wanting mine to bloom to say the least lol. Kortney has one that is getting ready to bloom, and has been documenting carefully, so maybe we will see this again in hers. I like the morphing idea though hee hee. If it were a kingianum hybrid, I would be in line for one, the color is nice.

I had something like that happen to one of my Cyms. this year. I had one bloom that came out different than the rest. It came out with 2 lips. I was told that it was due to too much fertilization. Odd indeed. Could something like that be the cause of this odd bloom?

I think that would make it peloric, if I am right. One of my phals in spike right now is peloric only it doesn't have fully formed extra lips they are partial. Hold on to that one I have a love for peloric plants ever since I found out what it was. I saw one a few weeks ago I couldn't afford, but I don;t come across them very often.

You can definitely see the difference between the two. Watch for the petals to twist and elongate and then the sepals to lengthen.

I did not see all the posts about them looking like two different flowers.

Every flower opens like the top flower and changes in color and shape into the lower ones over about four days.

The shape change is just that it is not fully open in the photo, and I have lots of orchids that change color from 3-10 days.
