I was watering today and it displaced some of the material around the plant and looked what popped up!

I got my shipment with the CB on 4-9. Yesterday, after Jirel said he discovered new growth, I went running to look at her. I had to push back some of the medium, but sure enough way down there (too small to get any pics!)was a tiny green something that was pushing its way to the surface.
I only have one other dendrobium, that I purchased a couple of month ago--but it's got all sorts of new growth! And now this--I did it right( even though I can't bloom paphs) I can't wait to post pics (it's a different shade than a root) YIPPEE! YIPPEE! YIPPEE!

How exciting!!! Love new growths, roots, spikes, and on and on. Love it all. Anything that's shows it's going in the right direction. Good growing!

Right on! I sometimes get more excited about new growths than I do for spikes or blooms. I love it when the plant just gets larger.

jirel: Glad to see the new growth on your CB. I too lost a couple leaves on my replacement plant, but also have a new growth. So, it looks encouraging for both of us. Let's keep our fingers crossed!

Yup, keeping my fingers crossed. I THINK I have a nub right where the leaf comes out of the bulb, but if so its growing more slowly than the new growth. I was kind of hoping for another leaf. I really can't believe I have real growth!

FYI for everyone, I'm female. The Jirel is for an old SciFi/Fantasy book (Jirel of Joiry) with a female protaganist.

That new growth grows quickly! I'm hoping I have enough of a change for it to show up tonight if it does, I'll take another picture. This is my FIRST orchid to show new growth on it. YEA!!!!!!

I'm really glad you all have some good new growth too! I love seeing all our pictures and comparing growth, its like that commercial, we're all sitting around a table talking and laghing and over to the side are the three baby Cathy Beck's sitting together.

I keep taking pictures because the plant keeps growing. From this angle you can REALLY see the size:

Then here is a good picture of the leaves:

Umm, btw - I thought putting it in a new pot was supposed to slow it down??

Yours is going crazy! Mine has slowed... I think because it's been cold here lately and I had her on the windowsill. Hopefully she'll start growing again.

One thing I've noticed with Dendrobiums...when it's their time to grow, nothing will stop them. They say the best time to repot is when their roots are growing and that's to allow the plant to adhere these new roots to the mix, for one. The only time I ever noticed the growth delayed is when I did a repot on one that had just gotten done blooming, the flowers were already spent and this particular Dend. took a little longer before the roots and new cane began to show but it all caught up. Now is growing season for most Dends.

Don't get too concerned if, after this growth, nothing appears to be happening for a while. They don't have to show signs of more growth to remain active, they need to rest as well.

Jirel, sometimes repotting sets a plant back, which may be what you're thinking of, but if done at the right time many orchids (dendrobiums included) will continue on without missing a beat.

Cool about the repotting. I don't mind, it just ... surprised me. Patticake, I'm sure the reason mine is growing is the weather here. Its been mild for Florida but much hotter than where you are!

Weekly Update for Cathy Beck

Wow! The new growth is now almost as high as the old. I'm not sure if it will stop growing and start making a bulb or if it will grow a little taller. This is really fun!

Umm, my ability to attach an image seems to be gone - so here's the link to the photo.

Very nice. I just love new growths. Until the plant is a mature plant, the new growths should be larger than the previous years. Or at least that is my understanding. Also, blooming size does not mean mature, so it could bloom and still grow bigger the next year. Keep us updated.

Maybe this is a dumb question...but I have two new growths on y dendrobium too, which are doing very well. Does this mean the plant is happy where I have it and will bloom there? Ive hadthis planbt only a few months and was in bloom when I bought it.

Sshide77 - I don't know, I think it will depend on the amount of light it gets. As I understand it, sometimes they will be very happy with the light for growing but it won't quite be enough to bloom. How long has it been growing but not blooming? When was it last in bloom?

Solay, thanks! I got my first orchid just a few months ago, so like I've said before - I wasn't sure I could grow them. I have killed at least one, I had one that the entire cane just fell over the other day. Looks like its a goner. But the number tht seem to be okay is still higher and I've got at least 6 with new growth.

Now that growth is a happy growth! And we were worried it had issues. Still doing the same for it?

So far, serious watering twice a week, occaisionally spraying it. I may have to re-examine the watering this week. Although the rain hasn't reached it, it has been very humid.

I'm thinking the same of mine. It took off and really put on some nice new growth but, no sign of bloom. Since they bloom on growth from previous years, I'm hoping that next year will be a doozie! Nice growing, Jirel! Keep up the good work!
