Connie's Dend Cathy Beck

My Cathy Beck is quite small but no tragedy has fallen upon her yet! I will repot her in my special all pupose coir mix when I get a small enough pot. Like all the other project plants I will grow it under T5's.

The gorgeous picture is what we eventually have to look forward to, the epitomy of a perfect Dendrobium. It was taken at the San Diego show and this picture does it no justice. No drooling!

Dend Cathy Beck tucked away in her little itty bitty basket. No tragedies, looking good. I am determined to make this baby grow!

Just HOW MANY hooks did they think it was going to take to hold up this plant! Really.....

Connie: The specimen picture is gorgeous. I hope that in the future, one of us will have something so beautiful.

Now, your basket: I couldn't help but LOL. It's a great little basket and I understand that the eight corners needed to be connected - but it does look like "overkill." Luckily, Anton only used 4 corners instead of 8. I think I'll order one from him.

Hehehehe.....

Come on now. You can't be too cautious with these little babies, especially with the luck we've had. Besides, Connie might need all those connectors for them Santa Ana winds ya know

LoL, Now that I look at it,,,, It looks like it's in it's own little protective fort ! LOL !

Update on Cathy Beck 5/12/2008

Here is my teeny cathy beck with only one leaf. That's a 50% loss; I think she is circuling the drain. I really don't do well with tiny orchids and would never have bought a plant this small had I seen it in person so I'm not too upset.

Connie I swear out of all the CBs, you have the cutest one of all.

Not a change in sight? No growth? Anything?

Oh, no.... Could it need more moisture? Being in such a cute & tiny basket- does it dry out too much maybe? I'm just grasping at straws, trying to help. Good luck...

I transferred mine to s/h Sunday, I had a leaf drop, and another that is not stable, so that is about 1/3 of the plant before the one leaf goes. I am hoping the s/h with Superthrive in the water will help it out. Sorry to hear about yours Connie it sure is cute!

Connie, does it have a small back bulb? Are you growing under lights or outside? It doesn't look like it's dying. Leaf loss is common, expected with Dends., especially this time of year, even on this one bulb, it should still grow. Let it get dry between watering, even bone dry. Weather permitting, can you keep it ouside in a sunny spot? You should start to see some growth over the next few months.

How often are you watering? With these guys being soo so small, and mine being in a combo of bark, perlite, and hydroton- it dries out almost every day. I mist every day and water every other day with wormtea. It sounds/seems like I'm overwatering, but look at it.

Connie, I just found my first new growth yesterday. I received the plant from Jerry on 4-9. It seems to take at least a month (of being in the dark and not knowing if you are taking good care of her) before you see new growth. Did you see Jirel's post? I went and looked at mine after I saw hers and was super pleased to see something green (even though it was really, really tiny and I had to poke the medium around a bit). It's one of my first den growths and I'll take it with pleasure!!

Connie - mine lost a leaf about 1 week after I got it. That too was a 50% loss. But now I have the new growth and just maybe a nub of another leaf.

I have it under T5 lights and have been letting it get dry between waterings, which for that tiny pot is about every other day. I have no new growth and only the one pseudobulb. The one remaining leaf is beginning to turn yellow now. Should I stick it in the dark?
Sandra this is the first year I am growing some of my orchids outdoors. I started the beginning of fall and winter, the two seasons that will be easiest for me and my orchids. I have two distinct groups - indoor and out. I don't like to do a lot of shuffling plants around because I can drive myself nuts. This is their first summer outdoors and I really have a feeling it's going to be a hot one, if April is any indication.

The cane looks fine. I'd keep doing what you're doing. Surely a growth is about to happen. I have a Den right now with no leaves at all and it's growing roots. Dumb thing even tried to pop a couple of spikes, but my apartment had a cold snap and the spikes couldn't handle it. That was a bummer, but the plant is still going, leafless and everything

Don't give up yet! Keep an eye on her.. Mist if she looks dry, and move to the light if she looks wet.... It's gonna be o.k.!!!
