I agree! Is that in photo shop? If it is that is one of my favorite effects to use. Cool and good job!

Jirel, that reminds me of an art project I did in elementary school. You color with crayons all different colors on a piece of paper and then paint back over it. Then you scratch the black paint off with your design revealing the rainbow colors underneath.

Anyone remember doing this in school? Well, that was an old memory. Thanks for reminding me of my childhood.

Solay - I think I'm too old to have done that and I didn't have kids, but I've seen other things done in the same "scratchboard" style.

Yes, this was done with Adobe Photoshop. Some of the colors reflect the colors in the bloom, sometimes they don't. I haven't figured out any type of rule for it yet.

Thanks to everyone for the compliments!

Your welcome! It looks cool.

I remember those art project things! So much fun! I have a scratch board picture I did about 5 years ago of mushrooms that one an award. Scratch board is my favorite of the two since you don't have to prepare it before you scratch.

Your welcome Jirel. I'm no spring chicken either but I act like a kid sometimes. My husband thinks I'm nuts cause every time he changes channels on the TV and a cartoon comes on, I'm in full attention with eyes glued to the TV. LOL!!! You'd think I was 5 years old or something.

I had never heard of it before and could not find any info by looking up the name. It is a costa farms orchid from Lowe's if that helps any. I'm not sure if it would be easy to find since I couldn't find it online anywhere. Maybe I could a keiki from it. for you. I'm planning on getting some of that keiki paste soon.

This is a classic example. They have deleted the grex from this orchid's name. There is no phal registered with the grex Magic Kiss so it must be a cultivar name. I have read about overseas phalaenopsis nurseries that add their own cultivar name to an orchid and then drop the grex so that no one can use the plant in breeding. This is a ridiculous practice and I wish the international orchid community could somehow ban together and stop it, but I'm not sure how that could happen.

Actually kid_a, it probably is the same plant, at least it is the same cross. Both phals are probably Phal MISSING-GREX 'Magic Kiss'. Yours is peloric, either because peloric parents were used or because some other genetic factor resulted in peloric flowers. I've said this many, many times here on the forum and it bears repeating again; it is important to grasp the fact that just because an orchid doesn't look like the one you're growing doesn't mean it's not the same cross. The amount of variation found in only one cross can be incredible. My favorite example to give is Cymbid Sarah Jean which comes in white, very light green, green with a pink spotted lip, green with a white lip, about 3 different shades of pink and (believe it or not) maroon, and that's just the colour variation. There's also the variations in flower shape and inflorescence habit. All of these different flowers are still all the same cross, Cymb Sarah Jean. Unfortunately with your orchid we may never know what the real name of your orchid is because of this crazy, and I believe dishonest and highly unethical practice of junking a hybrids' grex.

Does anyone out there with Wildcat or OrchidWiz find any Phal hybrid that bears the cultivar name "Magic Kiss"?

Orchidementia that den special effects entry is beautiful!! I love how the colors complement each other and the watercolor effect (i think that is what it is) is just so soft and lovely.

Award Potential

There's a problem with the name on Bllra. Smile Eri found here: July Photography Contest

The name hasn't been registered or there is a mistake somehow in the name. Normally it wouldn't matter much except that this flower is jaw-dropping stunning and I believe (based only what I can tell from the photo, or course more close scrutiny will be necessary) this flower has award potential. It could qualify for a flower quality award or it could qualify for a JC which is a special award for some distinctive quality or characteristic like the blue picotee. Unfortunately it can not be awarded without a correct name. If the name is not registered, that's ok, the parents could be listed and the unregistered name would be ignored as it's not valid until registered. But if it is simply a name with errors then it will need to be corrected.

I strongly and energetically recommend that the name be sorted out and that the plant be taken for judging.

Why thank you Al! If it gives me any keikis, I will definitely be more than happy to share. I'll cross my fingers that it gives me a keiki sooner, rather than later

I'm going to hold you to that JoBeth! I'm sure I can find something I have to trade. I have some coming along that are crosses that have never been grown to blossom size before. I'll have lots of surprises next year!

Thanks Kmarch for the nice complement. The tag reads Bllra. Smile Eri. The information I was able to gather is,
Bllra Tahoma Glacer X Oda.( Toroma X Ingera). Here's a
CU of the flower.
