I recently said this in the Hall of Fame but I want to put it here too to encourage members to submit their photos. I've seen, at least 3 or 4 times, winning members say they never thought they'd win one of the photo comps, and they didn't even enter to win, just to show a new bloom or one of their favorite orchids. I don't know which is more fun, winning myself or seeing another member get so excited and surprised from winning when they didn't expect to!

I've been a member of the forum for something like a year and 3 or 4 months and I was already a member when the photo competitions started. The improvement over that period of time has been quite substantial.

One thing I would like to point out, and that I think is quite important is that I have noticed that many of the photo comp winners these days are people who have learned and improved with us over these many months, not many of the winners are folks who have come in as excellent photographers, a few are but not many.

My hope is that this would encourage new people to enter the competition and start growng and improving along with the rest of us. You'll notice that we are mostly amature photographers, many of us armed only with our vacation-variety point and shoot digital cameras, and that we represent skill levels from "what's a shutter button" all the way up.

My point is that no matter what your skill level, no matter what your confidence level, there's a place for you in the monthly photo comp. There aren't any super egos raging around or super-critical comments. It's all quite a positive, nurturing, and enjoyable time.

And besides...if you've been a member for more than a week or so you've undoubtedly seen how hungry we all are to see pictures of everyone's orchid successes! Most of us get a lot of joy out of seeing what everyone else is growing. It's a treat! And what better way to share your success than by entering the photo comp?

It's spring in the Northern Hemisphere and Autumn in the Southern so there are probably TONS (or TONNES for my Australian friends) of orchids that are or should be coming in bloom just now. So lets get those cameras going!

Just to let the Photo Competition Entrants know there is now a new category and an Award for "Special Effects"

"Special Effects" would include extreme closeups, extreme photo manipulation, B&W, and anything else that is not covered under "Floral Art" or "Floral Display" category.

Another amazing month starting. The photos seem to be getting better every month. I wish the few that I have in bud/spike would bloom so I can take another shot at the competition.

ianddaniel, I noticed you posted a lovely pic of a pastel green cymbidium for the June photocomp. It's lovely but only one problem. It's upside down. Could you invert the pic?

I actually do realize this is "upside down" but that is the way I took the photo. I think it resembles a lions head this way. I hope this doesn't offend anyone, but I thought it looks very unique this way.

Feel free to debate this subject, I am open too, and welcome critiques; as I learn the most from other peoples point of view.
