Last month's photo comp was fantastic and it looks like we're determined to out do ourselves this month! Even though I'm not anywhere near a professional photographer I still love taking pics fo my orchids, especially fun to go back through when you don't have much in bloom. Keep those fantastic photos coming!

the quality of the pics has gone stronger and stronger each month
a wonderful effort is put into the pics by all the entrants

Freddie, your Maxillaria cuccuilata pic has just moved you out of the novice class. I am not being over-the-top when I say that it is most excellent.

What impresses me the most is how much everyone has improved over the past year and now concentrating on composition, lighting and backgrounds.

12 months ago the photos were taken in backyards, cluttered kitchens, on windowsills with the backyard in view and God only knows where else.

This only detracted from the point of the photograph, the beauty of the flowers themselves. NOW, the flowers are being displayed in all their glory without distracting backgrounds and are the centre of focus (no pun intended).

Well done everyone, especially "my students" who have listened and run with what I taught them. Makes me proud.

Hi y'all! I am a new member, and I noticed the photography contest you have on this site. What a great idea! I generally have only a few places to share my work. I have been taking photographs for about three years. I haven't taken any classes, but I have won several awards at various orchid shows (including the WOC this year). I would love to enter the competition, but so far I have not posted the required number of messages to post URLs here. You can see the imaes by searching for them in the Gallery. They are for the open contest.

Can someone tell me what they think about my paintings?

Funny, just came over to chit chat about your paintings. I didn't realise they were paintings at first.I think they are incredibly gorgeous! How unique. Can you tell me a little about your process?

I had questions about my lighting. How do I reduce the "blue" tint? I used natural sunlight shining in the background window and the overhead light and didn't know how to diffuse it with a plain digital camera.

Well i like to layer there is probably about an inch of paint on that canvas! The only place you can really see this well is on the bottom of the fan in the one with all three things in it.

Oh i forgot to say i also mix paints with matte finishes and ones with glossy finishes to get a more picture like quality. It kinda showed up weird on the pic though it looks like blank canvas...

Jenny, do you have a photo editing program? Most cameras will shift to blue, red depending...

I have iPhoto. I didn't know if there was a simple thing you could do while setting up your camera or area of shot.

The only other thing I suggest is if you have "white point correction" to play with that. Its worth a try
