Just what I was wanting to happen. It is good to see people taking photo tips on board and trying new techniques. Keep it up, good work. If anyone is interested I have an Acrobat file I made of how to build an inexpensive photo backdrop for photographing your plants. __________________ Anton -------------------------------------------------------------------------- orchid_lord Member Join Date: Jan 2007 Location: Bucharest, Romania, EU, Europe, Earth, Solar System, Milky Way Galaxy, Universe,... But to me, it didn't. I'd love to find a nice simple, inexpensive and EASY light meter. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Anton Senior Member Join Date: Aug 2006 Location: Adelaide, South Australia Posts: 688 I have a proper foot candle / lux meter, saves the arithmetic gymnastics that our age group can't cope with any more. If you are going to be serious about it, then you have to get the proper equipment. They are quite reasonable in cost these days too. Here's a link I found: http://www.dasdistribution.com/produ...cal_models.htm Anton -------------------------------------------------------------------------- BillC Member Join Date: Mar 2006 Posts: 162 Vivienne, I will try to explain Jerry's post to you. You must be using an SLR cam that has an inbuilt ex.meter. You place a mat surface white card where the light is falling. You set the film speed to 100. You set the shutter speed to 1/250. You look at the card through the view finder and fill the frame of the cam with the card. You move the aperture control until the ex.needle balances or the green light comes on (however the system operates) You then look at Jerry's table. 1000 foot candles 1/2000 f2.8 1/1000 f4 1/500 f5.6 1/250 f8 2000 foot candles 1/2000 f4 1/1000 f5.6 1/500 f8 1/250 f11 4000 foot candles 1/2000 f5.6 1/1000 f8 1/500 f11 1/250 f16 1/125 f22 8000 foot candles 1/2000 f8 1/1000 f11 1/500 f16 1/250 f22 If your reading at shutter speed 1/250 was an aperture of f8 you know that the light reflected from the card was 1000 foot candles. Still keeping shutter speed at 1/250 you find that the aperture is f11 so you know that the reflected light is 2000 foot candles. If you maintain the shutter speed at 1/250 you only have to know the aperture for that speed and you can ignore all the other speed/aperture couplings I hope this helps and my apologies to Jerry for using his post. Now that we are in June and the pics for the comp. will begin rolling in, I thought it would be good to have the chat thread where all members can see it. So I am making this post to place the thread so it can be seen. If it does not work I will fall on my sword!!

Robb - I'm answering the question you asked in the July Photography Comp thread. Fred will be removing your post as he tries to keep it strictly for the pics. The Phal in my entry is a Dtps. Lava Glow... (Doritis pulcherimma x Phal. Buddha's Treasure). It's definitely a stunning color and I love the fuschia lip. I've only had the plant since March (purchased locally) when the first spike was blooming. This is a second spike that was developing when I bought it. One of my favorite plants!! |
