Well, eager beaver DT... I posted photos before I really considered the three categories...while I labeled myself a novice, I'm wondering what the open category means... can someone give me a dimestore disertation of each one?

Sorry, kmarch! I really am bad at the search thing...but I did finally find it and it looks like I'm ok in the novice class... however, it might be a bad thing that all three of my pics are from orchids that had sticks with real names when I bought them... y'all can let me know!

Well, big fat typo on my part... what I meant to say is my sticks did NOT have real names... one was a generic Dendrobium stick, one was labeled Cymbidium (which I now realize I called it a cat...doh, I'm such a rookie), and the third was on a clearance table with no marker at all. It has fat psuedobulbs, and I'm a sucker for those every time. Apologies for the confusion!

Thanks flowerchild. She's such a ham. She's 21 months and if you tell her to say cheese you can get a good smile from her as seen on the photo. I thought the pastel colors of her winnie the pooh table, the orchid & her went well together. The other photo of the Cattleya I called smelling the flower because piglet looks like he's trying to smell it.

Scott the pic of Otaara Hwa Yuan Bay ‘She Shu’ is one of the best that you have taken. I love the light glistening off the petals. Piglet is just a plus.

There are only supposed to be 3 pics per person, per month. We're working on that case...

I'm sorry, I was not aware of that rule. I didn't even know there were rules. I am trying to figure out how to remove the post. Or if a moderator could remove it I would appreciate it.

THANK YOU! Im trying. I have nikon coolpix 5600 digital camera. I wish I could afford an slr. On the aquarium websites I belong to, they have taken some incredible shots of their african cichlids and then I look at mine.... Hugh difference in what you can do with an slr versus a point and shoot like mine. Id also like to do wildlife photography since Im a redneck (more of a hick since Im to far north to technically be a redneck). But with a 3x zoom I cant do much. even the video clips Ive made (13 yrds) of a doe seems distant with this camera. It was taken during archery season and I let her walk since she was small. She started at 13 yards and come to 6 feet of me when she tried to walk thru the bush I was hiding in to get to the other side.

Scott~ There are a lot of things that you can do with a point and shoot. That's all I have, and I don't even have a tripod. Experiment and you'll find the options that work the best.

As for the close encounter video......Oh I so wish I had my PSE Lightning Flight! MMmm Deer steaks!

That's a great series of orchid photos, i wish i can join but i permit myself only until i get to know orchids more.

I'm wondering if it's easier for the judges if all the pictures are post in a single size or will it deter entrees from coming in? Just a thought.
The advantages will be
- Easier facilitation for judges
- The ease of viewing for members
- Standardization since a cropped picture loses clarity but usually not the case since it's the megapixel race out there
- photoshop usage
- additional requirements needed? like borders which may enhance the total look of the photo itself.

Disadvantages
- Too formal
- deter contestants
- requires basic photoshop skills

Another point if i may suggest, is the comments given for contestants on how to improve their photos in the next round. This actually give the contestants a chance to progressively learn something new. The purpose is across the board for everybody to learn from each others' photo and not ours only. However different forum has a slightly different culture and perhaps it has been thought of and certainly gave a pass on it. The emphasis of a good picture shows a beautiful flower captured even better than what is seen. This is often the case like those postcard we see, it was taken at the right place, time, etc, etc. and when we are there, it only shows a slight replication.

Since i was involve in the process of such contest & will like to just share my knowledge on it. We even give prizes out to winners who are overseas but the cost of postage is to be paid by the contestants.

I'm sorry if i've asked too much...!

Cheers!

I think asking for all the pics to be one size is unfair as we can add them as attachments or from an image host
we do have this section if a member needs any help with improving there photography skills Taking and Processing Photographs - Orchid Forum Orchid Care

we have expert Judges who judge the monthly competition
about photography skills please read the photo comp rules

I wondered at first as well. Its "No IDentity". As in those phals and dends I love to buy from a cheap orchid store that have no tags on them telling me what they are.

Bird Song Farm, it looks like you and I have a very similar cym hybrid! (See my entry in the photo contest.) Where'd you get yours? Beautiful picture, by the way.

Hi Zuri,
I noticed that too! I got mine at a small green house that carries a few orchids. I have very little to choose from here, it's either a BB store or this one green house..

Mine didn't come with a tag. It's from Costco.

At least you have the one greenhouse. I imagine you are probably getting to know the owners well. I have a greenhouse about an hour away... between it, the internet, my local trader joe's, and my very own orchid room, I make sure that I always have at least two in bloom.

Is it very cold in Maine this time of year? Where do you keep your 'chids?

Yes, the owner of the little green house I visit and I are on a first name basis. She also grows orchids, that is why she has some for sale. The other green houses in the area might have a few during the summer but mainly don't carry orchids as there is no market for them here.
It is about an hour away also, as is H/D and Lowe's. I buy from e-Bay a lot.

I also have at least two or three phals in bloom all the time.

It is warming up in Maine now, the days try to get to the 40'sF but then there are days like today where it is 16F and a good wind blowing. I grow on windowsills and stands. Am looking forward to the middle of June when I can get the 'kids' outside for a couple of months. I'll have to watch them closely come the middle of August as the nights will be in the 50's and come September they will have to come inside again. Makes for a very short growing season!

That Cym I have that is like yours also had no tag. It is one of the large ones, leaves probably close to 4 feet and the blossom spike a good 3 feet. I have 4 other Cyms that just won't do anything for me. That's why I bought the pink one, it was in bud and I decided I'd at least have one flower for me!

Here are a couple of pictures of my Summer home for Phals and anything else needing that lighting.

Step out the sliding door and look to the right.

And a view to the left.

Thank you April,

This is my first Cym. rebloom so it's been a lot of fun for me. I didn't realize it would be so easy. I am not sure how the whole crossing the border thing would work but I will let you know when I have to repot. It's a great little grower, it put up 2 spikes and in the last month and a half it has sprouted 4 new growths.

This is my first time entering the photo competition

I have a question: How do u know who wins under each category? Is it like a private message the judges send you to let you know?

I love your Den spectibile! It is a favorite of mine. I have a small one that is several years from blooming! Very nicely done. I would love to see a pic of the whole plant.

Wow! What a giant! My little guy is really small compared to yours! I think I will have to find a bigger one just so I don't have to wait so long for blooms!

It is just beautiful!
