Orchid Collection For Sale

A while back I took in most of the collection of a fellow orchid grower whose greenhouse blew down in a severe windstorm. It turns out he will not be able to rebuild his greenhouse any time in the near future, although he does have plans to do so eventually. In the meantime, I need to free up the space that his plants are taking up, so thought it would be a good idea to hold an auction to benefit his greenhouse rebuilding fund. Here’s how it will work:

Ten percent of the price paid for plants will go to the Orchid Geeks support fund. The remainder will go to the owner of the now-defunct greenhouse and the plants.

If you see plants that you’re interested in, send me a PM with your bid. Every day I will post the high bid for each plant by editing my original list. If you want to bid higher, send me a PM with the new bid. At the end of 10 days, the high bidder will get the plant(s).

I don’t want to have to photograph all these plants, so I have provided as good and honest a description as I can. You can usually find a description of the plant and a picture of the flower by Googling the name.

These are all healthy plants, many of them blooming size, but all have some cosmetic damage and all are in need of tender loving care. None are hospice cases - that triage has already been done. They will all make fine additions to your collection. Not only will you get nice plants, you will help two worthy causes.

Before you pay for the plants, I will let you know how much postage will be. As a rule of thumb, you can figure $7.50 for the first plant and $1.00 per additional plant thereafter. However, large plants may be a bit more unless I bare-root them. Plants in semi-hydro (S/H) will, without exception, be bare-rooted for shipping. If you don’t mind having all your plants bare-rooted, this will cut down on shipping costs. Will ship only within continental US.

Here’s the list with Day 3 bids:

1. Blc Keowee ‘Mendenhall’. 7 mature pseudobulbs, but only 3 have leaves. In S/H, but would be shipped bare-root. HIGH BID = $10.00

2. Den Lorrie Mortimer. 6 pseudobulbs, has bloomed off of at least 2. In bark mix, badly in need of repotting.

3. Blc Keowee ‘Supachadawong’. 12 mature pseudobulbs, all with leaves, one leaf has sunburned spots. In S/H, but would be shipped bare-root.

4. Blc Abbeville ‘Golden Promise’. Small division with 2 pseudobulbs. In bark.

5. Mltssa Dark Star ‘Darth Vader’. Small division, 2 pseudobulbs, one new growth starting. In bark.

6. Blc Keowee ‘Vi Galaxy’. Small division, 2 small pseudobulbs, in bark. HIGH BID = $5.00

7. Epi Mabel Kanda x Lc Trick or Treat. Mature plant with 3 small pseudobulbs and 2 large ones with sheaths. One leaf has a sunburn spot. In bark with sphag topping.

8. Blc Waikiki Gold x Penny Kuroda. Tiny plant with one pseudobulb that looks nearly dead and one small new growth. Rescue case. In bark mix.

9. Bc Hippodamia. Large mature previously bloomed plant with at least 20 pseudobulbs, all with leaves, some sunburn. Potted in nasty, slimy, moss-covered medium, will be bare-rooted before shipping. It seems likely that many of the roots in the medium are rotted, but there are plenty of new roots hanging outside the pot. With a little care, this can be a gorgeous plant.

10. Blc Pink Empress ‘Lake View’. 7 pseudobulbs, 6 with leaves. Healthy plant.

11. Den Talia Beauty x Den lineale ‘Cherubs’ (or Den April Showers). 5 pseudobulbs, plus one new growth. Has bloomed before. Healthy. In bark.

12. Slc (Kauai Starbright x Gold Digger) x Epi stamfordianum. 8 pseudobulbs, all with leaves. 2-lead plant. Healthy. In bark. HIGH BID = $10.00

13. Bc Maikai ‘Mayumi’. 8 pseudobulbs, mature, healthy. In S/H, will bare-root before shipping.

14. Phal (Taisuco Windian x Taisuco Atienyuki) x Phal Nantai. Large mature plant with 3 leaves, some snail damage on developing spike. In bark, badly needs repotting.

15. NoID Catt, 6 pseudobulbs and 2 new growths. Previously bloomed. Nice healthy plant. In bark.

16. Blc Chia Lin ‘Golden Supper’. 4 smallish pseudobulbs, all with leaves, 2 small sunburn spots. In bark with sphag topping.

17. Lc Hawaiian Easter ‘Hawaii’. 9 pseudobulbs, 8 with leaves. 5 leaves have moderate to minor sunburn. In S/H, would bare-root for shipping.

18. Lc Luminosa. 4 pseudobulbs, all with leaves, and one new growth. Sunburn spots on one leaf and one pseudobulb. HIGH BID = $10.00

19. Lc Irene’s Song ‘Montclair’. 7 pseudobulbs, 6 with leaves. 4 leaves have mechanical damage (dents and scratches). In bark with sphag topping. HIGH BID = $10.00

20. Stma Kelly ‘Lea’. 13 mature pseudobulbs, all with leaves. 2 leaves have sunburn damage, 2 have mechanical damage. 1 pseudobulb is currently in bud.

21. Phal Pisgah Pleasure. Mature plant with 3 leaves and a 4th one growing. In spike now. In bark with sphag topping, badly in need of repotting.

22. C percivaliana. 3 small pseudobulbs, some damage from a (now inactive) scale infestation. In bark.

23. Den (Malia Akana x Mary Mak) ‘Hawaii’. Mature plant, 2 old leafless previously bloomed canes and 2 new growths. In bark.

24. Bc Maikai ‘Louise’ Too many pseudobulbs to count (25+), mature previously bloomed plant. 6 or 7 leaves have sunburn damage, but otherwise healthy. Potted in some unidentifiable, dense medium, needs repotting. Very nice plant.

25. Phal Golden Peoker ‘BL’ x Phal Brother Fancy ‘Ping Tong’. Small plant with 2 leaves. Potted in bark. All leaves have some snail damage.

26. Phal Golden Peoker ‘BL’ x Phal Brother Fancy ‘Ping Tong’. Medium sized plant with 4 leaves, all with some snail damage. Potted in bark.

27. Pot. Free Spirit ‘Carmela’ Small plant with 7 pseudobulbs and one new growth. 6 leaves have been trimmed due to sunburn, one has a small spot of snail damage. In bark.

28. Bc Nanipuakea ‘Dogashima’. Mature plant, 20+ pseudobulbs, all with leaves, several new growths. Nice plant. In bark. HIGH BID = $25.00

29. Pot Christopher Lee Luetticke (Soph coccinea aurea x Blc Momilani Rainbow). Mature, previously bloomed plant with 8 pseudobulbs. All except the newest leaf have some degree of sunburn damage. In bark.

30. Phal Brother Salu Spots x Brother Purple. Large previously bloomed plant with 4 leaves and basal keiki (2 leaves). 2 leaves of large plant have snail damage. Badly in need of repotting. Many roots appear to be dead, but with some TLC this could be a nice plant.

These look great, but having just ordered a bunch of plants for the 2 projects and a few more, I'm pretty much spent out. I'm going to a show this weekend and I'm saving a little to spend there. It would be great to see these go to good homes.

I don't think I have the room, but when has that been a show stopper? I'll be leaving the country for most of April, but will write myself a note to give you a call when I get back. I may have to stop be for a visit and see what you have left.

We'll be in touch.

Made4, there were a couple of species, but I'm keeping them . Slippery, by all means come by and take a look at whatever's left after the auction.

For some reason I don't seem to be able to edit my original post any more, so can't put in any new bids at this time. I'll update things tomorrow, through a new post if need be.

I would like to point out that I will not post bids that I consider to be significantly below the minimum threshold for what a particular plant is worth. The purpose of this auction is not to give the plants away, but to obtain a fair price for their owner.

Ellen, I'm so sorry I couldn't join in with your auction (being in the UK), but I wish you the very best of luck in raising funds for your friends new greenhouse.

Just so you know, the bidding officially closed last Monday, and most of the plants are gone. If anyone is interested, I still have the following plants from this collection:

Den Talia Beauty x Den lineale ‘Cherubs’ (or Den April Showers). 5 pseudobulbs, plus one new growth. Has bloomed before. Healthy. In bark. Just noticed a bud on one of the canes.

Phal Golden Peoker ‘BL’ x Phal Brother Fancy ‘Ping Tong’. A couple of these left. Near blooming size healthy plants with some snail damage on leaves. Flowers will be white with maroon spots.
